僭越ながら、本作の「位置」を紹介させていただく。
ジミという人は、その短い活動期間におよそ3つのバンドを作っている。
最も有名なのがJIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCEで3枚のスタジオ盤を制作し、多くの代表曲を残している。
このBAND OF GYPSYSは69年にBilly Cox, Buddy Milesと結成されたトリオで、EXPERIECEがジミ以外は白人による構成だったのに対して、黒いバンドになったのが表面上最大の変化と言える。
内容的にも勿論ファンキーな面を基調としたバンドである。

本作は69年12月31日、翌1日に各2回ずつ計4回のライブ音源をまとめたものだ。
ジミの生前既にバンド名と同タイトルのアルバムが出ているが、本作はそれに収録されたものと違うバージョンから構成されている。
故にマニアには「たまらないセット」になるわけだ。

一般のロックファンからは、なぜか脚光の浴びない部分を、かなりボリュームで味わうことができる。
録音状態も完璧でリマスターもエディ・クレイマーが担当している。
70年に入り、ベストと言い難かったライブ・パフォーマンスと較べれば、本作の秀逸さは特筆ものだと考える。
Machine Gunは本家のアルバムに及ばないまでも、1-#1、#3など本作でしか聴くことのできない名演も多い。
また2-#8は「その後のジミ」を思わさずにおかない幻の曲と言える。

　このライブアルバムはすごい。６９年、１２月３１日に行われたライブを収録しているのですが、なんといっても１曲目の「ストーン・フリー」がすさまじいです。中盤はどこまで行くんだ~と言う感じで突っ走り、終盤のクライマックスのギターが本当に格好いい。鳥肌が立ちます。
　何よりこの時期のライブで珍しいのはドラマーのバディ・マイルスによるジミとのコーラス？の掛け合いです。
　ただ、あまりメジャーな曲が入ってないので、中級者向けと言えるかもしれません。演奏はある意味で頂点を極めたものと言えますので、お勧めできます。

　正直、録音状況がどうの言われて聞き取れるほど耳が良くないのですが、ジミヘンのライブではこれを一番聴きます。どの曲が一番とかはこの際関係なく、丸ごとのライブとして聴いたほうがジミのギターを堪能できると思います。ギターのすごさはもちろんなんですが、ジミヘンの歌ってよく聴くと本当にスゴイ。あれだけのギターに負けない歌ってなかなか歌えないですよねー。リズム隊をギターボーカルの一人で完全に食ってしまう･･･。こんな人、今いたらどんなジャンルで音楽やってんでしょうかスゴイ気になります。
