早いもので今年もクリスマス・アルバムのシーズン到来。残暑厳しい昨日今日、クリスマスといってもいまひとつピンとこないが、南半球ではクリスマスは夏が当たり前。あっちの人たちは雪景色一色のクリスマス・ソング(北半球産の曲がほとんどだからそうなる)をどんな気持ちで聴いているのだろう。それはともかくこのサイラスのクリスマス・アルバムはヴィンス・ガラルディがスヌーピー&チャーリー・ブラウンのTV番組用に書いた曲を中心に、トラッド、自作などをまじえた実に楽しい内容。童心に返ったかのようなサイラスの嬉々としたピアノがいいし、アレンジも秀逸。たとえばヒューバート・ロウズをフィーチャーした「エリーゼのために」なんてゴキゲンなラテンだ。さらにパット・マルティーノ、ゲイリー・バーツ、マイケル・ブレッカー、ケニー・ギャレット、ヴァネッサ・ウィリアムス、マンハッタン・トランスファーなどゲスト陣の顔ぶれも魅力。心なごむアルバムです。 (市川正二) --- 2000年10月号
