　ジョン・ロートンは、イギリス人であるが、そのキャリアをドイツのハード・ロック・バンド：ルシファーズ・フレンドのシンガーとしてスタートしている。 LUCIFER'S FRIENDは、ジャズ／プログレッシヴの要素も持った実験的なハード・ロック・バンドで、知名度は高くないが、英米以外ではまだ珍しかった本格派のバンドで、その筋のファンにはよく知られていた。特にヴォーカルのJohn Lawtonの目の覚めるような美しい高音は、ロック30年の歴史を経ても色褪せることのない素晴らしいものであった。LUCIFER'S FRIENDの代表曲は「Ride The Sky」という曲で、若干ツェッペリンの「移民の歌」を思わせるコーラスでスタートするスピード・ナンバーである。

　しばらくドイツで活動を続けるが、後にその実力を買われ、デイヴィッド・バイロンが去った英バンド：URIAH HEEPに2代目シンガーとして迎えられる。しかしバンドがやや下降線だったこともあり、アルバム3枚を残し脱退。一時ドイツに舞い戻って1981年の LUCIFER'S FRIEND 再結成にも加わっている。

　この後、ロートンは再びドイツに舞い戻り、2つのバンドでシンガーを務めた。1つが REBEL（リベル）の「Stargazer」。もう1つが ZAR（ツァー）の「Live Your Life Forever」（本作）である。哀愁を帯びた旋律が格好いい、ハード・ロック・ナンバーが満載だ。その完成度は素晴らしく、良い曲が多い。ロートンの天高くどこまでも伸びて行く高音には心が洗われるようだ。メタル系寄りのバンドのレヴューじゃないみたいだが、ロートンの美声には確かにそんな響きがあるのだ。美しいが、決して弱々しい声ではなく、完全透明だが適度にパワーも兼ね備えている。ちょっと滅多に居ない声で、聞いて損はないと思う。

　その美声に惚れ込んで、元DEEP PURPLE/RAINBOW のリッチー・ブラックモアが真剣に自分のバンドに誘ったほどだ。普通人であるロートンが、リッチーの奇行を嫌ったようだが、もしかしたらRAINBOWの歴代シンガーの中に名を連ねていたかも知れない人なのだ。ハード・ロック/ヘヴィ・メタル・ファンならば是非聴いてもらいたい一枚である。
