ディオンヌのベスト・アルバムだが、ソール・シンガーと言うよりはスケールの大きなラブ・バラードを包容力溢れる歌唱力で歌いあげるディオンヌの特徴が詰まったアルバムと言える。

「I'll Say Goodbye To Love」はカーペンターズもカバーしているバカラックの曲だが、カレンのシミジミとした歌唱に比べ、曲想の豊かさが強調されている。この他のバカラックの曲も、ディオンヌにベスト・マッチで彼女の歌唱力を引き出している。「I'll Never Fall In Love Again」はディオンヌの代表曲と言っても良く、美しいメロディに乗せて失恋の痛手を「このような恋は二度と出来ない」と嘆きながらも、壮大なスケールで歌う様が印象的。「Will You Love Me Tommorow」はカバー曲と言うよりは、キャロル・キングがディオンヌに提供したものだが(キャロルも自身の「Tapestry」に収録)、恋の永続を願う想いがヒシヒシと伝わる名曲。

女性でありながら、美しさとスケールの大きさを兼ね備えた歌唱力を持った稀有なボーカリスト、ディオンヌの魅力が溢れた佳品。

二人のコラボレーションは、1960年代から70年代のポップス・シーンをリードしていました。
「ウォーク・オン・バイ」「アルフィー」「小さな願い」「サン・ホセへの道」「恋よ,さようなら」など、稀代のメロディ・メイカーであったバート・バカラックが作ったこれらの数々のヒット曲をディオンヌ・ワーウィックの歌で聴くと洋楽が大好きだったあの頃を思い出します。

1960年代から70年代のポップス・シーンを考えた時に、ディオンヌ・ワーウィックとバカラックの幸せな出会いがなければ、世界のヒット・チャートはきっともっと貧弱になっていたと思います。まさしく膨大な“スタンダード・ナンバー”が次ぎから次ぎへと流れてくるようです。

この素晴らしい女性シンガーの存在は、我々に当時のポップスの素晴らしさをより上手く伝えてくれました。
1969年の世界的大ヒット曲「恋よ、さようなら」の♪I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN♪は当時の日本人の多くがこのフレーズを口ずさめることからいかにヒットして親しまれたかが分かると思います。

もうこのように洋楽のヒット曲が日本で親しまれることも少なくなりましたが、同じヒット曲を皆で共有できた時代というのは幸せだったのかもしれません。

実は「サン・ホセへの道」と「愛のハーモニー」の二曲しか知らずに買いましたが、他の曲もかなり良くて大正解でした。ディオンヌの歌声は、すんなり耳に入ってきれいに抜けていく感覚があり、すごく心地よいです。週末の深夜に照明を落としてお酒を飲みながら聴いてます。
