余計な虚飾を取り払ったメロディーが紡ぎ出す、生々しい音楽が
ここにある。アルバムの端から端まで黒いムードに満たされており、
通して聴いたあとにはある種の強烈な印象が胸に残る。
粘り気のある重いタッチで執拗にリフが繰り返されるたびに、
暗くて深い悲しみの世界に引きずり込まれていくようだ。
マルのピアノを知る上で欠かせない一枚。

晩年のビリー・ホリデイの伴奏をしたピアニストであり、チャールス・ミンガスやエリック・ドルフィらとの共演でも、ユニークな作編曲の才能と前衛味を帯びたパーカッシブで特異なタッチの演奏で異彩を放って来たマル・ウォルドロン。彼の代表作はいうと、自ずと「レフト・アローン」ということになるであろうが、彼の世界が完全な形で端的に表されたという意味では、このアルバム「オール・アローン」を忘れるわけにはいかない。「孤高」とは彼のためにあるような言葉であり、悲しみや怒り、そしてそれを優れた芸術に昇華するマルのモデスティな精神には多くファンやミュージシャンがリスペクトを惜しまない。ここに表されている童歌のような素朴さと深い精神性は同時代のどのピアニストとも類型化しえない独自の存在だといえよう。
