   1997年暮に『ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ』という本が新潮社から出版された（2001年には続編も出た）。ともにジャズ好きとして知られているイラストレーターの和田誠と作家の村上春樹の共著。まえがきを和田、あとがきを村上が担当したその本は、ジャズメンを描いたポートレイトとエッセイの2段攻撃でジャズの魅力に迫った内容だったが、その本の出版に絡めて両者のセレクションによるCDが2社から発売された。これはその1枚で、本に登場する26人のミュージシャンの中から半分の13人の歌と演奏をおさめた作品。収録されているのは、チャーリー・パーカー、ハーブ・ゲラー、アート・ブレイキー、スタン・ゲッツ、ビル・エヴァンス、デューク・エリントン、エラ・フィッツジェラルド、エリック・ドルフィー、カウント・ベイシー、ナット・キング・コール、ディジー・ガレスピー、セロニアス・モンク、レスター・ヤング。音源はヴァーヴが中心。イラストと文章、そして実際の音がそろっているので、ジャズを身近に感じられる点がなんとも魅力だ。（市川正二）

村上春樹さんの選曲には、本当に感謝している。
僕は、ジャズ初心者なんだけれども、ジャズの幅をひろげるのにすごく助かった。
他の「ジャズ入門ＣＤ」は、だいたい同じような曲ばかり集めたものが多いけれど、このＣＤは村上春樹さんの長年のジャズ歴を生かした、選曲になっている。
有名ではないけれども聞きやすくてオススメ、という曲が多い。
ジャズ初心者から一歩前へ踏み出したい人に、お勧め。

和田誠、村上春樹、お気に入りのジャズですから、悪いはずがありません。それはともかく、村上春樹が書いているライナーノーツがいいです。ジャズにまつわる個人的な逸話ですが、他では読めない文章なので、それだけでも価値があります。

ジャズなんてちっともわかりませんが、
春樹好きが高じてかったCDです。

なんといってもトラック２がきにいりました。
ちょっと変なメロディーで、陽気な感じで、
素直にイイです。
ふらんすはパリを彷彿させます（行ったことはない）。

ジャズ入門に最適かと、勝手に思ってます。
