アイルランド系アメリカ人の北米大陸での苦闘の歴史150年と合衆国への貢献を振り返るプロジェクトの一環であるコンピレーション。ディズニー制作のテレビ・ドキュメンタリー用のサントラで音楽監督はチーフタンズのパディ・モローニ。美しくたくましい。

今年の1月にアメリカのテレビで『ジ・アイリッシュ・イン・アメリカ』という6時間番組が3日間にわたってオンエアされた。1800年代半ば以降、アメリカに移民した150万人もの人々の今日までの歴史を紐解いたものだそうだ。これはその番組のサントラ盤で、チーフタンズのリーダー、パディ・モロニーが主宰する新レーベル、ユニスフィアからの第1弾アルバムでもある。曲ごとに、ヴァン・モリソン、エルヴィス・コステロ、メアリー・ブラック、シニード・オコナーなどなど、実に豪華なメンバーが、アイリッシュ・トラッドの数々を披露してくれるわけだが、モロニーほか友人たちの穏やかで流麗な統一感ある伴奏によって、それぞれの声が生き、胸に迫ってくる。「ある人々は軍隊で世界を征服する。アイリッシュはそれを歌でやった」とは、番組の監督がライナーに寄せた言葉。飢饉に喘いだがゆえのブルースが、こうまで優しい肌触りになるのは、なぜなんだろう?番組もぜひ観たい。答えを知りたい。 (山下泰司) --- 1998年04月号
