誰もいない真っ白なビーチに残されたカラフルなパラソル。
夏が去った後の切なさ、虚しさ、苦さ、寂寥感。
クリス・レアのしゃがれた歌声とほどよく枯れたギター、
必要最低限のセンスのよい演奏。
分別のある大人にしか分からないようなビターな味わいが、
このアルバムには満ちている。
読み返すほどに染みてくるようなポエティックな歌詞も素敵だ。

なくしたものをすべて吹っ切れるほどかっこよくはない。
心に浮かんだクエスチョンは、潮風が吹いても消えやしない。
人間は、惑って、迷って、生きていく。

幸せいっぱいのラヴソングなど聴かせてはくれないこのアルバムが、
いつも夏の終わりにはカーステレオの恋人になる。

某車のCMで日本でも大ヒットを飛ばしたタイトル曲を含む傑作アルバム。

アメリカ西海岸でもなく、ハワイやグアムでもない。どちらかといえば地中海あたりの、ヴァカンスシーズンも終わった静かな海。切ない思い出に浸りつつ、波の音を聞く。静かなんだけどしみじみと心に訴えてきて、聴いているうちに波に心が洗われるような、そんな一枚です。哀愁のあるメロディなんだけど、すごく癒されてなんだかすがすがしい気持ちになれそう。少し大人になりたい夏に。
もちろん、スライドギターの素晴らしさ、つぶやくような心に沁みるヴォーカルももいうまでもありません。夏以外にもお勧めです！

5.0 out of 5 stars この浜は寂しさとわびしさで全身がしびれる。, 2003/5/11
本作では俺ひとり On the Baech という感じである。とくに On The Beach から Little Blonde Plaits では、ぞっとするほど晴れ渡った青い空と海、そして一面の白い砂浜にただ一人たたずんでいるのが伝わってくるようである。とてつもなく寂しく、わびしい。このように海に対峙した経験はだれしも一度や二度はあるのではないだろうか？　なんらか分岐点にいたったとき、とくに精神的にダメージを受けた時に自分を取り戻そうとするとき、浜に向かうことがある。この2曲は途中で途切れず「波」の音でつながっている。鳥肌が立つほどかっこいい、寂しい、わびしい展開にしびれまくること請け合いである。
