オリビア・ニュートン＝ジョンは英国生まれの豪州育ち。
１９８０年代の国際的なアイドルです。そんな彼女の作品集てきなCDです。聴いていると70's〜80'sの温もりのある楽曲に恵まれていたことがわかります。

ささやく感じの歌唱方法で、なかなか“うまい"とは言いがたい気もしますが、雰囲気が良いのでいいのではないでしょうか。僕らの世代（1977年生まれ）でいえばカイリー･ミノーグっぽい存在なのかもしれませんね。
Have you never been mellow　は、本当に心にやさしい楽曲で、こちらの性根まで正しくなりそうです。他の曲もささやくような雰囲気のものが多く、ポップなもだとＡＢＢＡとカーペンターズの要素を感じたりしました。カレン・カーペンターズとは親交があったようなので、相互に影響しあったのかもしれませんね。

　空気にふわっと溶けるかのようなソフトなハイトーンが美しいメロディーにのって軽やかに流れてくると、甘酸っぱい切なさとともに爽やかな心地よさに包まれます。
「清爽感」という言葉を具現化するかのようなタイトル曲をはじめ全編に70年代ソフト・アンド・メロウの精髄が息づく名曲ぞろい。

「気絶するほど美しいアルバム」と発売当時絶賛されましたが、その輝きは今でも少しも失われてはいません。永遠のエバーグリーンではないでしょうか。
　狭い意味ではカントリー系、ということになるのかもしれませんが、それよりもナチュラルで完成度の高いポップスとして今でこそ多くの人に聴いてもらいたいアルバムです。

初めて買ったオリビアのＬＰでした。

タイトル曲は未だにオリビアの代表とされているもので、
日本でも周期的にTVコマーシャルで使われたりしています。
前奏・後奏でのオリビアのため息のような声が本当に美しくて、
それだけで聞いている方まで夢見心地になってしまいます。

個人的には「安らぎの世界へ」がとっても気に入っています。
これこそ英語のアルバムタイトルにあるmellowを表しているかのようです。
中でもため息混じりの抑制された声で歌われるah-ah-ah-ah-ahのパッセージは
オリビアの全ての曲の中で一番美しいのではないかと思うほどです。

歌謡曲調の「朝もやに包まれて」も大好きな曲です。
マイナーコードが揺れる気持ちを表しているようで、
リフレイン部も、２番になると気持ちの押さえが効かず
Please never leave me.と叫んでしまう心の動きが伝わり、
さすがオリビアという感じです。

「貴方の腕の中で」はとてもチャーミングな曲で、
このアルバムのmellow路線を強める一役を買う、とっても女性的な楽曲ですし、
「哀しみの架け橋」や「イッツ・ソー・イージー」は
mellowなアルバムを単調に陥らせないよう流れを作る元気な曲です。

オリビアの代表的アルバムとして恥じることのない名盤です。
