フジテレビと横浜ランドマークホールの共同企画で、ハイビジョン放送用の収録が行われた際の音源。当初はプロデューサー/リーダーのカルロス菅野氏の意向で自主制作盤としてリリースされていたものが、後にデビュー盤のビクターリリース時に再度リリースされたもの。まだメジャーになる前の熱帯ＪＡＺＺ楽団の最も初期の姿を記録した貴重なアルバムである。デ･ラ･ルス組のラテンフレイバーにＪＡＺＺフレイバーが塗され、しかも日本を代表するトッププレイヤー達の揃った豪華なビッグバンドサウンドで、ウェザー･リポートやタワー･オブ･パワーの曲等の斬新なアレンジ等、聴きどころ満載である。レパートリーも雰囲気もメジャー化してかなりラテン＆ポップに傾いてしまった感のある今よりも、この頃はまだ手探り感もあり、「何をやってくれるのかな」という新鮮な驚きに満ちている。ラテン、ジャズ、現代音楽等何でもこなせる塩谷哲在団時で、彼の果たしていた役割の大きさが感じられる。

詳しいことは知らないのですが、塩谷哲好きから、熱帯JAZZ楽団のCDを集めていました。個人的には、このアルバムが最も好きです。その理由はヒゲーニャさんが書いているのと同様に、このアルバムが一番、混沌としている感じがあるからです。

その他のアルバムでは、すでにある種の思想的なものを感じさせるアルバムになっていますが、それが、このアルバムではあまりなく、それがかえって、新鮮さを生んでいるように思います。
要するに、才能ある人ばかり集めて、ちょっと音楽してみようか、というだけで、最高の音楽を作ってしまったという感じがするアルバムです。

ラテンあり、Jazzあり、何でもあり、そんなアルバムです。

Orquesta De La Luzでお馴染だったカルロス菅野率いるラテンジャズビッグバンド「熱帯JAZZ楽団」の記念すべき1枚目。ライヴ盤。
選曲は「熱帯JAZZ楽団II〜September〜」以降と比べてジャズ〜フュージョンのアレンジやラテンスタンダードが多く、ビッグバンドファンならずともその手の音楽が好きな人にとっては感涙もの。
また、卓越した演奏力を持ったメンバーが一同に介したライヴだけあってその熱気も半端じゃなく、特にRay Barrettoの「El Watusi」を彷彿させる「Kangaroo '98」はブーガルーの楽しげなノリで前面に出ていて好感が持てます。

聴いてるだけで純粋に楽しめる至高の一枚です。
