ジャズギターの神様とされるのはチャーリー・クリスチャンだが、彼の影響を受けながらもオリジナルの奏法を確立して、あらゆるジャンルの多くのギタリストらに影響を与えたという意味ではウェス・モンゴメリーこそが「神」ではないかと思う。彼は左手での弦の押さえ方によってオクターブ差のある音をユニゾンで重ねていく「オクターブ奏法」という前人未踏のアイディアを実践してみせた。この奏法はジャズのみならず、ロックギタリストらも当り前に使う奏法として、今や完全に定着してしまった。この奏法を用いた緊迫感溢れる演奏を聴く事ができるアルバムの代表として、このアルバムを推薦する。このアルバムはウェスのリーダー作ではあるが、ピアノのウイントン・ケリーとのバトルが素晴らしく“ツー・トップ”のアルバムとして捉えても間違いではない。特に「No Blues」における二人は、始めは静かに、そして徐々に熱を帯びて緊張感あふれるソロの応酬となって行く。ウイントン・ケリーはもともとブルース・フィーリング溢れるプレイで有名で、自身のアルバムだと「楽しんでいる」という感じのフレンドリーな演奏が多いのだが、このアルバムではウェスに触発されたように本気まる出しの熱いプレイを聴く事が出来る。また、ここまで二人がバトルを繰り広げることが出来たのはベースのポール・チェンバースとドラムのジミー・コブの安定したリズム隊があったればこそ、であることも忘れてはならない。マイルス・コンボ時代からのウイントン・ケリーの仲間である彼らの、根っこが張ったような安定感は「史上最強のリズム隊」と言っても過言ではない。このアルバムを聴いていると、ジャズは「リラクシング・ミュージック」では決してなく、ロックにも劣らない熱さを持った音楽だ…ということを痛感させられる。またそれは、クラッシックにも負けない芸術である事も言うまでもない。

ウェスのアルバムの中で、個人的には最高のアルバムだと思います。一般的には「インクレディブル　ジャズ　ギター」や「フルハウス」の方が評価が高いようですが・・・。ウェスを聴き始めて１０数年になりますが、いったい何人の人にこのアルバムをプレゼントしてきたでしょうか。ほとんどが酔った勢いで強引に押し付けてきたような気もしますが・・・（ビル・エヴァンスの「ワルツ　フォー　デビー」もセットにして）。ノレる・シビレる・泣ける（バラードで）の三拍子揃ったアルバムです。ジャズに興味を持ち始めた方、または夜の甘いお時間のお供にとお考えの方、このアルバムはそんな方にもお勧めです。ただ、決して眠りを誘うようなアルバムではございませんので悪しからず

ウエスモンゴメリー（超有名ギター奏者）、ウイントンケリー（最高にファンキーでブルージーなピアニスト）の2大競演による上質のライブアルバム。このアルバムではウイントンケリートリオにモンゴメリーがゲスト出演という形で演奏されている。

どこから沸いて出てくるのか不思議なウエスのギターフレーズ。そして、オクターブ奏法、微妙なタッチなど完璧なテクニック。彼こそジャンルこそ違うがセコビアと並ぶギターの巨匠だと思う。
このライブでは彼の想像力、演奏力が十分に楽しめる。
それをウイントンケリートリオがそれと対等な演奏を見せてくれる。

長年一緒にやってきたような素晴らしいバンドサウンド。
ロックファン（私はそうですが）にも是非お勧めの一品。
