1978年に発表されたMARC JORDANの1st。
当時はまだAORというジャンルは無く、シティ・ミュージックと呼ばれていました。1978年といえば、BOBBY CALDWELLがデビューし、BOZ SCAGGSやRUPERT HOLMESさらにはMICHAEL FRANKSなどAORミュージシャンが注目を浴びるようになった年で、AORが本格化する大事な年となりました。
そんな時にMARC JORDANは、GARY KATZのプロデュースにより、この"MANNEQUIN"でデビューしました。
今聴き直してみると、MARCにとっては、その後の音楽活動に対して、このファースト・アルバムがいかに重要なのか認識できます。
2ndの"BLUE DESERT"はAORの金字塔的アルバムとなり、また、3rdの"HOLE IN THE WALL"はその延長線上にあるアルバムでしたが、サウンドを例えて言うなら、「豪華絢爛・華美・装飾のしすぎ」とでも言えば良いのでしょうか、そんな感じがします。これらはおそらく、MARC本人の意図するところじゃなかったのかも知れません。
MANNEQUINに収められている曲はどちらかというとあまり飾り立てることもなく、知性的で親しみやすいメロディを持った曲が収められており、MARCのちょっと乾いた感じのヴォーカルとマッチしています。
特に5曲目の"RED DESERT"は、彼の隠れた代表曲とも言える曲で、知性的で親しみやすいメロディを持った曲で最高です。
1曲目の"SURVIVAL"は他のアーティストにもカヴァーされていて、代表的なところでは、IAN MATTHEWSのものが原曲を殺すことなく結構良い仕上がりとなっています。
2曲目の"JUNGLE CHOIR"の出来も"RED DESERT"と同じくらい良く、お薦めの1曲ですね。
4曲目の"MARINA DEL REY"はちょっとカリプソ風の曲ですが、最近出した彼のベスト・アルバム"LIVING IN MARINA DEL REY AND OTHER STORIES"ではそのタイトルともなっており、彼のルーツがこの1stなんだなと窺うことができます。
9曲目の"ONE STEP AHEAD OF THE BLUES"は、曲の始まりのTOM SCOTTのサックスがとてもカッコ良いジャジーなナンバーで、最近のMARCのアルバムに収められていても違和感がないかも。
10曲目の"LAST BECAUSE YOU CAN'T BE FOUND"なんかも9曲目同様ジャズの香りがするナンバーです。
