レコード会社の都合でテキトーに寄せ集めたセンスのないベスト盤・コンピ盤が大手を振って乱発される風潮であるが、この「メロウ・アイズレーズ」と「グルーヴィー・アイズレーズ」の対となる2枚のアルバムは、アイズレー・ブラザーズを熟知したセンスのよい選者が、愛情をもってセレクションしていることを実感できるすばらしいアルバムだ。
どちらのアルバムにも捨て曲は一切なく、選び抜かれた名曲が気持ち良く並べられてぴったりとパッケージされている。

「メロウ・アイズレーズ」「グルービー・アイズレーズ」出るべくして出た２枚のベスト盤。アイズレーを語るとき、どちらも極めたこの２つの顔を語らずには済まない。
で、こちらのメロウ盤。遡ってアイズレーに出逢ったビギナーのうち、多くの人が「Between the sheets」や「(At your best)You are love」等のメロウなアイズレーに惹かれたのでは？
とすればこの一枚は宝石箱のような存在になるだろう。
メロディ、アレンジ、雰囲気、ボーカルどれをとっても、どの曲をとっても、メロウ極まりない。
それにしてもこの”Mellow”という言葉、なんてアイズレーにピッタリなのだろう。
SweetでもSmoothでも綺麗でもしっくりこない。
なんとなく艶っぽく、哀愁を帯び、酔いしれるような、正に「メロウ・アイズレーズ」最高です。

90年代の日本にソウルムーヴを沸き起したSUBURBIAの橋本徹氏が監修したIsley Brothersのメロウテイストの高い楽曲を集めたコンピレーションアルバム。橋本さんのフリーソウルシリーズの中でも特に多く収録されてきたIsleysだけに、橋本さんのIsleyフリークは凄いのだろうと思っていたし、こういったアルバムが発表されるのもなんとなく予測できた。

まず初心者がThe Isleysの楽曲を買うのならまずお薦め出来るのが、この"Mellow Isley"と同時期に発売された"Groovy Isleys"だろうと思う。70年代の「3 + 3」体制時の名曲がほぼ網羅されていて、これだけの良い楽曲が溢れたベストアルバムは本当に珍しい方だ。

個人的に言えば、このメロウ盤に"Groove With You"と"Don't Say Goodnight (It's Time For Love)"が入っていたらベストだったのだけれど、それは欲張りすぎなのかもしれない。甘く官能的なIsleysの魅力が沢山詰まったアルバムだと思う。
