　うなるベース、締まったドラムス、切り裂くギター。グルーブするビートに乗って歌われる日本語の歌詞。ダルなボーカルが恋人の待つ町へ旅する男の熱い思いを吐露する”抱きしめたい”。このオープニングナンバーに聞かれるシュールな日本語の歌詞と、それを支えるタイトなリズムセクションが、はっぴいえんどの最大の魅力だ。

　無骨だがほのぼのとしたボーカルが、適度にレイドバックしたリズムセクションに支えられて、独自の歌世界を作り上げる。松本隆のカラフルなメタファーによる心象描写が印象的な”風をあつめて”。大滝詠一が激しくロックする”はいからはくち”。細野晴臣のアコースティックな世界に浸り子供の頃にトリップする”夏なんです”。鈴木茂のボーカルとギターが鮮烈な”花いちもんめ”。

　全曲に渡り、４人の素晴らしいミュージシャンが各自の個性と力量を充分発揮しつつも、バンドとしての一体感とオリジナリティが全く損なわれていない。これほどまでに完成度の高いアルバムで思い起こされるのは、ビートルズのアビーロードくらいだ。ジャパニーズロックが生み出した文句なしの超一級品。

　ジャケ色が示すような、まさに曇ったアルバムです。夏の夕暮れ、今にも降り出しそうな雨雲の風景。急いで帰らないと雨に降られてしまう、そう思いながら少し急ぎ足で帰った子どもの頃を思い出させます。あの夏の日の、雨に濡れたアスファルトの臭いを漂わせています。夢や希望を歌い、幸福な気分になれる音楽ではなく、そこには現実と私たちが忘れていた空間が詰め込まれています。このアルバムを聴いて何かを感じたあなたは、風街の住民になれる資格充分です。

彼らの独特の世界観がとても大好きです。
自分が生まれた頃に、こんなにかっこいい音があったんだなと。
お薦め作品です。
