   1997年編纂のボブ・ディランのベスト盤。ディランの場合、オリジナル・アルバムの数が多いうえ、各時代ごとに名盤と呼ばれる作品があり、さらには歌詞が難解なため日本語対訳がないとなかなか曲の内容を理解できない等々、初めて聴く人にとってはハードルの高いアーティストともよく言われる。そんなディラン・ビギナーにオススメなのが本盤だ。

   62年の余りにも有名な「風に吹かれて」から、89年の『オー・マーシー』収録曲「エヴリシング・イズ・ブロークン」まで、ディランの代表作といわれる作品を過不足なく網羅した選曲の良さ、菅野ヘッケル氏によるディランのバイオグラフィーおよび詳細な全曲解説、そして歌詞対訳と、入門用としてこれほどコンパクトかつ充実したテキストは他にない。“一家に一枚の必携盤”という表現も、決してオーバーではない。（木村ユタカ）

Bob Dylan Greatest Hits, 同vol.2が近々日本で再発されるらしいが、それらは選曲が６０年代のものに偏っている。Dylanは７０年代、８０年代の作品も非常に素晴しいので、これからDylanの曲に馴染もうとする人にはそれらGreatest Hitsはお薦めできない。The Essential BOB DYLANはその点６０年代から９０年代までDylanの全キャリアをカバーしているが、ＣＤ２枚組みで少々高価であることと、８０年代の名曲が少ないのが欠点である。本当はBest盤から入門するのではなく、例えば私がそうであったように、７０年代のライブ盤（例えば「武道館」）から入っていくのがいいのではと思うが、やはりCD１枚でいいからスタジオ録音の名曲のオリジナルに手早く接したいと思う人には、現時点では本作が入門編として最適と思う。それでも８０年代の作品は手薄なので、早く「インフィデル」「ブートレッグ・シリーズ」第３集を聴いてDylan８０年代の名曲の凄さに接して欲しい。最後に、本作を推薦する理由はもう一つある。それは一番最後に「嵐からの隠れ場所」の別テイクという、将来必ず欲しくなる名演が収録されていることである。この１曲のためだけでも、Dylan初心者を卒業した人にも本作はお薦めである。

歌詞カードのオリジナルの英詞のすぐ横の行に日本語の対訳が書いてあるんです。比べながら読めてとても便利でした。
ほんとにちょっとしたことでした。

聴かなきゃいけないなんて事は無いのだけれども、人生において（少々大袈裟だが）是非この人の音楽は聴いた方がいいって言う人がいる。ボブ・ディランはその最たる存在だ。
じゃあ聴いてみようってなった時、どれから聴いたらいいか迷う。ディランなんてアルバムは40枚も出てるし、ベストだっていろいろある。
そんな時は、これがとりあえず一番いい。
最近出た赤いジャケットの三枚組なんて、カネが余ってるならいいけど、あんまり大した内容じゃないし、こっちで充分。で、気に入った曲があったらそれの入ってるオリジナルアルバムを買いましょう。
