ポールデスモンドはボサノバ体質なジャズメンだと前から思っていました。

彼は「自分のアルトの音色がドライマティーニのように聞こえるように」と思いながらサックスの練習をしていたらしいです。

確かにこの優しい独特のアルトの音色とボサノバのサウダージの相性はバツグンですね。

夕暮れのビーチで・・
カクテルを飲みながら・・

聴く者すべてを遠い世界に連れて行ってくれます。

　ともに前に出る芸風でないデスモンドとジム・ホール。聴くものをテクニックで圧倒してやろうなどという野暮なことを思わないであろう2人のコンビだからこそ、このリラックスしたムードを醸し出せる。でも、ジム・ホールの伴奏はシンプルなようで非常に高度で洗練されたものであるし、まぁ楽器のことが分からない評論家などが、このアルバムを軽く扱うのは非常に腹立たしい。ポール・デスモンドのプレイも譜面に起こしてあるのではないかと思うほど、メロディックであり美しい。スケールライクなところがまったくないのが素晴らしい。よく耳にするスタンダードは「夜は千の眼をもつ」ぐらいだと思うが、デスモンドのオリジナルも良い。「東九番街の女」なんかは凄く好き。
　この時代に残されたボサノバ風ジャズはかなりあるが、その殆どが現在聴くと時代を感じさせる。しかし、これは古臭さを感じさせない1枚である。

ポール・デスモンドほどジャズ評論家ﾉ軽んじられているサックス・プレーヤーもいない。いわく、軽い、イージー、独創性がない、商業主義的ジャズだ。などなど。文学だって純文学と大衆文学があっても、大衆文学は純文学より劣る。ということにはならない。同じように、わかりやすいジャズがつまらないということには、ならない。暖かい、ちょっとくぐもったデスモンドのトーンは実にいい。オリジナルのボサノバ調の曲が多いこのアルバム、聴けば、ブラジルの夕暮れの海岸にひとっ飛び。心の底から癒される。同時期の「テーク・テン」「イージーリビング」「デスモンド・ブルー」もおすすめ。（松本敏之）
