カルチャー・クラブ、その名からしてすっかり８０ｓのイコン。
カラフルな蛍光灯のように、曲も素晴らしくバリエーションに富んでいておそらくこの1枚こそがカルチャー・クラブの代表的アルバムだと思う。
ボーイ・ジョージの歌声を褒め称えた、ポール・ウェラーは、過去にジョンレノンとポールがカレン・カーペンターズの声を特別な財産と評したこ

とと近いと思われる。それほど彼のボーカルは人間味を増していたし、メンバー全員の確かなアレンジと演奏力に触れ温かみすら感じる。
彼らが幼い頃に吸収してきた過去の音楽が、カテゴリーに分けられることなくひとつにつまっているのは本当にセンスの良さとしか言いようがない。

もっとも有名な「カーマは気まぐれ」が収められたアルバムですが、他の曲も
全て聴きごたえのある曲ばかりで捨て曲がみあたりません。
「ザ・ベスト・オブ・カルチャー・クラブ」というベスト版も出ていますが、
その中の曲の半数以上がこのアルバムから収められていることを見ても、いかに
この作品がすばらしいかということがわかります。
個人的な意見としてはこの「カラー・バイ・ナンバーズ」こそがカルチャークラブのベスト版と思っています。

1980年代前半に登場し、世界を席巻した彼らのセカンドアルバムにして最強の作品。ジャケットを見ると思わず引いてしまいますが、内容的は素晴らしいホワイト・ソウル作品だと思います。Boy Georgeの声はあくまでも滑らかで力強く、サウンドはシンプル且つダンサンブルです。コンピュータが音楽作成に大々的に導入される寸前の、バンド主導によるダンスミュージックの傑作アルバムです。
