　レナード・コーエンは異色のシンガー・ソングライターです。もともと音楽活動もしていましたが、1956年にまず詩人としてデビューし成功、63年に小説家としてデビューし、66年の小説第二作「歎きの壁」で成功します。その後ジュディ・コリンズに提供した「スザンヌ」のヒットで注目され、シンガー・ソングライターとしてデビューしました。この作品はコーエンのデビュー作です。
　メロディがはっきりしている「さよならマリアンヌ」は別格の扱いでベース・ドラム・コーラスが入って華やかですが、いわゆるヒットを狙えそうな曲はこれだけで、それ以外はギター一本の弾き語りに近いシンプルなスタイルです。メロディもはっきりしない曲を、元気のない声でぼそぼそと遠慮がちに独り言のように歌ってます。正直、好きですけど、それほどすごいとも思わないんですが・・・・ただ、こうしたコーエンの世界が多くのミュージシャンに熱烈に愛されてきたのも確かなわけです。
　このアルバムは代表曲「さよならマリアンヌ」「スザンヌ」が入っているわけで、ロック・ファンは一度は聴くべき作品でしょう。
