アルバート・アイラーはフリージャズなので敬遠している人も多いと思う。
確かに、ノイズを延々と撒き散らすだけのつまらない演奏がフリージャズの誤解を招いているのは事実だと思う。
だからこそ、ドルフィーや、オーネット、そしてアイラーの代表作に絞ってとりあえず聴いてみて欲しい。
このアルバムは、アイラーの中でも最高傑作に位置づけられる。
本物のフリージャズは魂の叫びであるということが実感できると思う。
絵画が具象派と抽象派に分かれるように、ジャズもやはりメロディアスな演奏と抽象的なフリージャズに分かれているのだ。
メロディアスな演奏もいいが、抽象的な演奏も一度味わいを知ると抜けられなくなるものだ。
ぜひ、演奏を理解するのではなく、魂の叫びを「感じ取って」欲しい。
なお、本作が気に入った人は、「スピリチャル・ユニティ」が兄弟作のようなものなので、併せて聞き比べるといいだろう。
