Album Details

Psychedelic Japanese band featuring Haruomi Hosono on Bass. This is classic blues inflected psyche-rock, the vocalist Chu Kosaka sings in English on most tracks and you would swear these guys are from the states. Features a cover of Bob Dylan's 'Pledging My Time'. Originally released in 1969.

、、　1969年といえば私は中学二年生。下降線のGS人気。ムードコーラスみたいな曲が巷を賑わせていたころ。日本のロックグループでこんなアルバムを作っていたとは驚きのひとことです。＜エイプリル・フール＞というバンドは＜フローラル＞と言うグループが前身で、のちの＜はっぴーえんど＞に続く。と言うことを知ったのはつい最近です。
　70年代、日本のロックは細野系と内田系に分かれていました。私は内田系をおもに聞いていました。どうも細野系は軽い感じがして好きではなかったのです。
　このアルバムはいろいろの志向性に分かれています。ブルースロックあり、プログレシヴロックあり、ジミヘン調フュージョン調まであります。ｓｕｎｄａｙという曲だけは、後の細野系につながる曲だと思います。はっぴーえんどの先入観のある人には退屈かもしれません。

メンバーは細野晴臣、松本隆、柳田ヒロ、小坂忠、菊池英二。
まだ日本語ロックなんてのが世の中になかった頃のバンドで、ロックンロールってのは英語じゃなきゃだめなものだと思われてた時代のものである。そのため収録曲も英語詩のものがほとんどである。
よくはっぴいえんどの前身バンドとして有名だが、聞いてみると少し違う感じも受ける。確かにここからはっぴいえんどにシフトして行こうとしたのは事実だが、ヴォーカルを担うはずだった小坂が抜けてしまったため、大滝詠一が加入したはっぴいえんどとは別物の感じを受ける。この頃はアメリカへの憧れが強く、それをまねしようとしてるのが精一杯で、最高にいいアルバムとは言いがたい。それでもこの時代に新しい日本語ロック創造のための、足がかりになった一つのバンドではあるので、簡単に面白くないアルバムであるとは言いがたい。聞いているとアレンジやメロディなどは興味深く、その技術が高いことが伺える。
残念なのは英語詩がほとんどなところで少し退屈するところぐらいです。
