　エンヤ・コアーズ・ソーラス・S.オコナーなどのようにロックやポップスに傾いたケルト風音楽もいいかもしれないけれど、こうした伝統的でアコースティック楽器のみの朗らかなアルタンの音楽は聴いていて一番ほっとします。チーフタンズのような雄大さ・寂寥感もなく、ルナサのようなグルーヴ・緊張感もなく、アルタンは「地味」という言葉がとっても似合うスタンダードなバンドと思います。
　このアルバムはフィドルのマレードの歌を中心に組まれた日本編集のベスト盤で、アルタン以前の1983年にマレード・ニ・ウィニー＆フランキー・ケネディ名義で発表された「北の調べ」も含め、アルタンの93年「アイランド・エンジェル」までの初期のアルバムからの選曲です。
　マレードの歌はピッチが若干不安定で、声量が少なく線が細いですが、そうした欠点を補って余りある可憐で魅力的な美しい声で、実はこれがアルタンを聴く一番の楽しみだったりします。
　収録曲の出典が書いてない点はバツ。あと未発表曲があるわけでもなく、特別なセールス・ポイントがないアルバムです。ただ、歌ものに絞ったということで、インストが苦手な人にもとっつきやすいアルバムでしょう。厚手の紙のブックレットのデザインもいい感じです。ケルト音楽に興味を持った知人に何か勧めるとしたら、やっぱ、アルタンですしね。これなんか、いいかもです。
