初めて聞いた時に感じた間の心地よさとは違った、
音の響き方に驚きました。
やはりマイルスバンド出身者は違う！！と。
キースやチックばかりじゃなくてこっちも聞いてみて、
日本人にピッタシの切ないバラードとか(決して甘くない）
節度あふれる(矛盾してる？）ピアノソロとか。

小曽根真、上原ひとみ、大西順子など日本のジャズミュージシャンの海外での活躍は、近年、野球やサッカー同様にグローバル・スタンダードな世界で通用するレベルになってきた。秋吉敏子や渡辺貞夫、日野皓正といった先駆者が苦労してようやく入り込んだ世界にいとも簡単（といっても実力あっての話だが）に受け入れられるほどインフラは整備されてきたといえる。ピアニスト赤城ケイはそんな中でもマイルスのバンドに在籍した日本人ミュージシャンとして特筆すべき存在であろう。若くして渡米している赤城だが、まさに実力で勝ち取ったといえる。このアルバムはマイルスへのオマージュと自身の進むべき道程の確認という意味をあわせたアルバムで、随所にマイルスへの思いがこめられている。オリジナルのトラヴェルド・マイルズやミスター・パストリアスも彼の精神性を感じることが出来るが、ラヴ・フォー・セール、マイルストーンズ(old)、マイルストーンズ(new)、ステラ・バイ・スターライト、ザ・ソーサラー、アイ・ソート・アバウト・ユーと続くマイルス解釈は赤城のただならぬ実力を感じる。実際これらのバラードなどは、ハービー・ハンコックやビル・エバンスといった巨匠の手にかかっており、よほどの勇気がなければエピゴーネンとして終わるか、比較されて尻尾を巻いてしまうしかないからだ。独特のタイム感覚と音符の使い方は、トリースターノに通じるコード分析、モード解析がなされているのではないだろうか。いずれにしても日本人がここまでやれるのかという喜びを感じさせてくれる快作だ。
