ポストDream Theater最有力候補のスウェデッシュ・プログレッシヴ・メタルバンド、Pain of Salvationのサードアルバム。
前作"One Hour by the Concrete Lake"も非常によい作品でしたが、この"The Perfect Element Part1"はそれを超える名盤だと思います。

ポストDTと書きましたが、このPain of Salvationは他のDTライクなバンドとは一線を画しており、独自の「プログレッシブ・メタル」を展開しています。人間の内面をえぐるような、重厚な哲学に基づいて構成される楽曲は洗練されていて、アルバムを出すごとに『進化』しています。ポストDTどころかDTと並んだといっても過言ではないと思います。

重厚な#1 Usedから寸分の隙もなく、美しいメロディーの#4 Morning on Earth、#6 Her Voicesを経て最後のThe Perfect Elementに至るまで気が抜けません（笑）

ともかく買って損はしないと思いますし、買ったならば何回も繰り返し聞くことをお勧めします。飽きがこないし、何回も聞いていればより深みが増してきます。

2003年2月現在、Part2の製作も順調に進んでいるようなので、そちらにも期待したいところです。

プログレには大いに免疫があった私ですが、このアルバムには良い意味で驚かされました。聴き始めた途端「なんじゃこりゃ？！」という印象が強烈でした。過去のパターンに当てはまらない良質なサスペンス映画との出会いに似ています。妙な寒気を感じました。今まで聴いたことのないような曲調、展開です。
ツボにはまれば星10個ですが恐らくマニアック性が高いです。
