The Buzzcocks, and the singles they released between 1977 and 1979, clearly had a far greater influence on the UK independent scene than the
Sex Pistols or their punky peers. The racing, chiming guitars, the vulnerable vocal, the considered, witty lyrics, the quest for the undeniable hook--these would be standards for long after the Pistols' blast and snarl had died away. So any new Buzzcocks material--including this, a double live CD featuring one 1978 gig at Manchester's Apollo, and another at London's Rainbow the following year--must be of historical interest. The sound is sometimes shaky, and much of it is played too fast for Pete Shelley's reedy, untrained voice, causing him to ruin such delicate oddities as "Nostalgia". Nevertheless, it's uncommonly charming in its innocent rush, the band's unbelievably polite chatter ("Don't stand on the seats, there's people behind you!") and the Manc crowd's chant of "The Buzzcocks! The Buzzcocks!"--strange to hear the definite article employed so raucously. Charming, yes, but only briefly,
Beating Hearts is one for collectors and the Buzzcocks' immediate families only.
