今から２０年以上も前の大学生のころ通ったJAZZ喫茶で必ずと言っていいほど流れていたアルバム。すぐチェックして（当時ＬＰを）買おうとしたが、"廃盤！"。その後、中古レコード屋に寄ると必ず探したものですが結局手に入らず。同じJAZZ研の仲間がタマタマNEW YORKの中古レコード屋で手に入れたのをカセットに録音させてもらったりして・・・。良い作品だけど、私的には滅多に市場でお目にかかれない"珍品"と化しておりました。

内容的には、とにかく「ファンシー・フリー」が最高！当時のJAZZ喫茶で、この曲がＪＢＬ４３４３あるいはアルテックにような大型スピーカーで流れると、思わずゾクゾクしたものです。

ＢＬＵＥＮＯＴＥ録音であるが、録音時期が比較的新しかった事と、既にフュージョン時代の初期の頃だった事もあってあまり注目されていないディスクであるが、非常に聴き応えのある演奏。西海岸サンフランシスコの郊外にある「ライトハウス」という有名なライブハウスでのライブ盤。ホーン陣にはマイルス・バンドから抜けたばかりの若きスティーブ・グロスマンと、これからマイルスバンドに参加するデイブ・リーブマンの二人が参加。ピアノレスの編成でエルヴィンのグルーヴと若きテナー奏者のバトルが存分に堪能できる。日本の代表的な音楽家＆サックス奏者の清水氏も、サックスプレイヤー必聴の一枚と太鼓判を押している。

●エルビンには大変失礼だが、このアルバムはリーブマンとグロスマンの２人を聴くためのものと言っていいでしょう。何しろこの２人の壮絶さと言ったらたまりません。実際、このアルバムをフェイバリット・アルバムに挙げているプロのサックス奏者が沢山います。私も昔、サックスを吹いていた時代に、このアルバムを耳タコになる程聴きまくっていました。

●このアルバムはマイルス・ファンにも避けて通れないものであると思います。録音当時（1972年）、既にマイルスバンドを退団したグロスマン、これからマイルスバンドに入団するリーブマンの２人の勇姿が十分に堪能できるからです。この２人はマイルスバンドでも強烈な活躍ぶりでしたが、その強烈さがこのアルバムでも体験できます。

●現在では日本盤・輸入盤共に完全に廃盤となってしまい、ネットオークションや中古屋でも高値で出回っている様ですが、こういう名盤こそもっともっと再発して欲しいものです。
