73年作。メンバーが一人脱退。ロック、ジャズ、クラシック、古楽、現代音楽、フォーク…何でもありの、曲調がコロコロ変わる作風は更にさえわたり、全体像がなかなか把握できない、万華鏡のような音世界。いつも以上に、音の配置や奥行きに対するこだわりを感じる作品。
「THE RUNAWAY」はあっちこっちへ翻弄し聞き手を嘲笑う、もぐら叩きのような曲。デリケートなボーカル、鋭いサウンドで次々入り乱れる演奏陣。急に現れるリコーダー、奥の方で響くような聖歌風コーラス、マリンバのソロなど印象的な場面がツギハギ、パズルのように組合わさる。「AN INMATES LULLABY」は可愛らしいマリンバやビブラフォン等と囁きかけるボーカルが甘美な眠気を誘う。「WAY OF LIFE」序盤は聞いてるこっちが蹴つまずきそうなアンサンブルで突っ走る。暗い海底を潜行するような場面から鋭い輝きを放って飛びかかるムーグがカッコイイ。だが、美しいボーカル・リコーダー・弦楽・オルガンのクラシカルな展開へ急変。更に序盤の疾走が戻り中盤の浪漫と交錯するも、最後は荘厳なオルガンが全て飲み込む。「EXPERIENCE」は優雅な歌声、クラシカルだが、ミラーハウスの中で迷うような奇妙な演奏。ベース・バイオリン・オルガン等の輪唱。教会音楽風ボーカル部が出現するも、今度は荒くれロックンロールが割り込む。様々なモチーフが混迷。「A REUNION」は優しい歌と弦楽に抱かれ、うっとりする曲。「IN A GLASS HOUSE」はジェスロタルとPFMが同時にやってきたような魅力溢れる曲。煌めくアコギ、しなやかに踊るバイオリン、牧歌的ながらもスリリングな演奏に興奮。ボーカルはほのぼの。タイトなドラムとともに歌メロがスピードアップし駆け出す場面がたまらん！後半ヘヴィになるかと思いきや、聖歌がちらつき、ロカビリーまで…。

３兄弟の長男フィル・シャルマンが脱退し、彼らの「剛」の部分が強く出てきたアルバム。メンバーの脱退・交代などがあると普通は音楽性が大きく変化してしまったりするものであるが、彼らの場合は驚くほど変化がない。さすがと言うべきだろう。
前作「Octopus」がクラシカル・オカルティックな「柔」の部分が強く出た傑作だったのに対し、本作は鋭利なジャズっぽさやヘヴィなハードロック的な曲調に特徴を持つ「剛」の傑作と言うことができるだろう。１曲目のクロスリズムなどはＧＧではもはや定番とはいえ、やはり圧巻である。そして２曲目の複雑なポリリズムは拍子を数えることすらままならない。３曲目はスピード感あるハードロックから優美なバロックアンサンブルへと変化するお決まりのパターン。これは１作目からずっと受け継がれている。４曲目はオープニングのヴォーカルから複雑なクロスリズム、そして圧巻なヘヴィロックへと突き進んでいく。クラシカルな５曲目で落ち着いた後は、エレピやサックス、アコギにヴァイオリンまでもが複雑に絡み合うジャジーな大作６曲目に酩酊。
聴きやすさもありＧＧ初心者にも薦められるアルバムだ。

一部コアなファンの心をつかんで離さない伝説のプログレバンド、
ＧＧの４作目です。

ボーカルは弱い気がしますが、変拍子の重なる複雑なリズムと
それを自然にこなす高度なテクニック、そして楽曲自体の魅力は
名状しがたいものがあります。

７０年代のプログレに興味のある方には、是非体験していただきたいと
思います。

とりわけ、３曲目のＷＡＹ　ＯＦ　ＬＩＦＥは名曲です。
