   レイジ・アゲインスト・マシーンのシンガー、ザック・デ・ラ・ロッチャが脱退を表明した。9年間バンドと活動を共にした末の決断である。本作『Renegades』は、ザックが参加した最後のレイジ・アルバムとなるわけだが、有終の美を飾ったと言える出来だ。リック・ルービンがプロデュースを担当した本作は、現在の（そして過去の）レイジを育てたアーティストたちのナンバーを取り上げたもの。

   レイジのラップのルーツがアフリカン・バンバータ、EPSM、ヴォリューム10にあることは容易に分かるが、クラシック・ロックやパンク・ロックに取り組んだときのレイジの方が興味深い。彼らは、MC5の名曲「Kick Out the Jams」から、強烈とはいかなくともナマのスピリットをつかみ出している。後半に登場するサイプレス・ヒルの「How I Could Just Kill a Man」は、本作の2つ目のライヴ・テイクだが、B-リアルとサイプレス・ヒルの参加を得たことで、一段上の仕上がりとなった。ディーヴォの「Beautiful World」が一聴してそれと分からないほど静かなアレンジとなっているのに対し、マイナー・スレットの「In My Eyes」は素晴らしくメロディックで、過剰なまでに激しい演奏だ。ローリング・ストーンズの「Street Fighting Man」は不安をかもし出すテクノ調、ボブ・ディランの「Maggie's Farm」もモダンなスタイルにうまく化けている。

   結論を言えば、『Renegades』は必須の1枚だ。選曲、演奏の質、いずれも見事である。不満があるとするなら、音楽と政治の現状に対して敏感なロック界随一のラインアップが、本作で終わりを告げそうなことだ。（Katherine Turman, Amazon.com）

If Renegades proves to be the last Rage Against the Machine album to feature singer Zack de la Rocha, who quit the band after nine years, it's a cool way to go out. Produced by Rick Rubin, Renegades is a salute to the artists who made Rage what they are--or were. While it's easy to hear Rage's rap roots in songs from Afrika Bambaataa, EPMD, and Volume 10, it's more interesting to see their take on rock in its classic and punk forms. Rage capture the raw spirit, if not the quite the intensity, inherent in the MC5 classic "Kick Out the Jams." A superior second live take appears at the CD's end, followed by a concert version of Cypress Hill's "How I Could Just Kill a Man," with help from B-Real and Sen Dog. Devo's "Beautiful World" is rendered quietly unrecognizable, while Minor Threat's "In My Eyes" is given a wonderfully melodic, ultra-aggro treatment. The Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" takes on a techno vibe that's unsettling and Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm" is also effectively modernized. Ultimately, Renegades is a must-have for its song selection, musical execution, and the unhappy fact that it's likely the ultimate offering from one of rock's most musically and politically relevant lineups. --Katherine Turman

私はレイジの作品の中では、このアルバムが一番気に入っている。

基本的に私は、カヴァー曲というものが好きだ。なぜかと言うと、元ネタのアーティストに対するリスペクトや愛が感じられるからである（そうでないのも稀にあるが…）。で、このアルバムだが、全部カヴァー曲。泣ける。しかも、この選曲、演奏…。最高である。

まず、大物アーティストの曲が多く選ばれている点が嬉しい。ローリングストーンズ、ボブディラン、ブルーススプリングスティーンに始まり、ストゥージズ、ＭＣ５、ディーヴォまで。これだけのものが一つのアルバムで味わえるのだから贅沢の極みである。しかも、それらの曲を完全に自分たちのものにしている。

そのことがよく分かるのが、ストーンズの「STREET FIGHTING MAN」。原曲は、どちらかと言うとルーズな曲だったが、このカヴァーは、ものすごいキレである。トム・モレロの大迫力のギタープレイに乗っかるザックの弾丸ラップ。原曲をここまで再構築できるものなのか…圧巻の演奏である。

ちなみに、マンガ『ＢＥＣＫ』２０巻で、主人公たちがこの曲を演奏するシーンがある。ギタリストが暴走し、ボーカルがラップで応じる。そして観客の一人が、「原曲の跡形もない！」と叫ぶのだが、このシーンは、レイジのこの演奏をヒントに描かれたのではないかと勝手に思っている。（実際、作者はレイジを「奇跡のバンド」と呼んでいる。）


とにかく、レイジの真骨頂が聴ける豪華盤。買って損はないよ。

　やばいね！！どのアルバムも切れていて、暴れたくなるがこのカバーアルバムも例のごとくやばい！！
　しかも、原曲をこえるかっこよさになっている。ハードコア・パンクからHIP・HOPの影響をうけてるだけあり、カバーセンスもいい、これがラストアルバムだけにライブはみたかった。
　今後この手の音楽性でこのバンドをこえる（セールス的にも影響力でも）ことのできるバンドはでてこないだろう。仮に再結成したとしても・・・。その後のオーディオレイヴスやザックのソロも物足りない！！本気が伝わってくるアルバムです、全ロックファン必聴です。

名曲のカバーアルバムなので当時あまり期待していなかったが、
ザックが脱退するとしって　即購入、するとやっつけ仕事感の無い
すごく聞きやすいいいアルバムだった。政治批判系のアルバムも好きだが、先人たちの偉大な曲を歌うザックのメロディはなんか新鮮で純粋な感じがしたので最後の最後にやってくれたな！という感じでした。
