録音も含めて最高度に素晴らしい演奏。特に第4番ト長調はピアニストに対する敬意と共感に溢れたサー・コーリン・デイヴィスとシュターツカペレ・ドレースデンの伴奏も含めて、驚くべき叙情性・精神的美に満ちた奇跡的な演奏と評しても過言ではない。もしかすると史上最遅かもしれないアラウの悠然かつ精緻な輝きに満ちたピアニズムが、この曲の細部に込められた意味合いを真に自然に浮き彫りにする。伴奏者もそれにぴったり寄り添いながら、パンチの効いた劇的トゥッティも揺るがせにしない。神秘的かつ厳粛な孤独な中での神との対話。至福の時間。「皇帝」も技術的な衰えを感じさせない見事な出来栄え。一生持つにふさわしい宝物だ。

　ベートーヴェンのピアノ協奏曲、それも４番と５番を一枚に収めたという、一見お買い得感あふれる一枚。肝心の演奏は、ちょっとおとなしすぎるが問題ない水準だ。聴き手に元気を与えるような５番の終楽章はいつ聴いてもいいものだ。
