現在イギリスを席巻中の恐るべき天才少年クレイグ・デイヴィッド。人は彼のことを“キング・オブ・2ステップ”などと呼ぶらしい。なんでもハウスの世界ではその2ステップという、アメリカのR&B、イギリスのアシッド・ジャズやドラムンベースなどを呑み込んだなどといわれる新カルチャーがブームらしいのだが、そんな狭い物言いで括るのではあまりにも惜しい普遍的で説得力あるポップ・センスがこの作品にはある。官能的なメロウさや無機質エレクトロ・ビートは今のアメリカンR&Bでも主流として十分通用する。しかし、それもさることながら、やはり一番強いのは粘着力のあるベタな歌謡メロディと、マイルスのトランペットのごとくクールで抑制の利いたクレイグの声。これさえあればサウンド形態の如何はもう不問でいいはずだ。ハウス云々と抜かす前に“英国の平井堅”ぐらいの軽い気持ちで聴いた方が、この作品の本葉の素晴らしさは浸透するはず。 (太澤陽) --- 2000年10月号
