Andy Cato and Tom Findlay have gone from strength to strength since first appearing on Tim Love Lee's Tummy Touch imprint in the early 90s. Their recent
Vertigo album has been hailed as an "armchair rockers" classic, and this collection hands over some of the LP's peaceable grooves for a hand-picked selection of
Remixes. The duo's choice of producers is perhaps surprising in that they eschew the inevitable big name talent for a range of lesser-known beatmakers. This would be understandable if the results were more exciting or experimental for it, but invariably they aren't. Most of what's on offer in this package is pretty dull. Akasha's Post Modern Mix of "Pre 63" takes the tune into funky d & b territory, but isn't exactly mind-blowing in terms of new ideas. DJ Icey gives If "Everybody Looked The Same" a laid-back electro edge, but again doesn't turn the heat up quite enough. DJ Dan and Terry Mullen's mix of Chicago (the suitably titled "Bongorella Dub") is as insipid as they come, and Attaboy's mix of "Whatever, Whenever" is equally as non-essential. The main reason to purchase this LP would be the last set of mixes. GA's own remix of "Rap" is tuff enough to nod to, Tim 'Love' Lee's Semi Bearded take on "Your Song" is a typically insouciant and mellow mix which uses the stripped down vocal to full effect. Kinobe's mix also offers his own idiosyncratic take on "A Private Interlude" and Elephant's remix of "Inside My Mind" is a mellow grower too. Despite these more enlightened attempts at the art of remixing though, this isn't quite enough to make a good album, especially since Vertigo's two killer tracks ("At The River" and "I See You Baby") haven't even been included.--
