１９８０年に結成されたPig Bagは、パーカッションとトランペット、クラリネットなどのホーン・セクションのみで構成され、初期はジャズ／ファンク的なサウンド指向をもっていました。ジャム・セッションの末、よりロック的なアプローチを目指してドラム、ベースが加入、そして元「Pop Group」のSimon Underwoodが加入し、大所帯なバンドへと進化していきます。「Slits」とのツアーを経て、これまた「Pop Group」で有名なDick O'Dellの「Y」レーベルと契約し、数枚のシングルをリリースした後にリリースされたのがこのデビュー・アルバムです。ファンクやダンス・サウンドとトライバルな民族音楽のテイストをミックスし、ポスト・パンク系の初期衝動的アティチュードを持ったこのアルバムは、「Pop Group」や「Rip Rig & Panic」と並び称される革新的なモノでありました。リリース当初、アルバムとしては大きな成功を収めなられかったものの、デビュー・シングル「Papa's Got a Brand New Pig Bag」を再リリ-スするや一気にブレイクし、全英チャートの上位へランクされるほどになりました。バンドとしてはたった３年、３枚のアルバムを残して解散してしまいましたが、エッジの効いたファンク・サウンドとパンクの融合が素晴らしく革新的なアルバム。時代に埋もれてしまった隠れた名盤といえましょうか。傑作です！

誰でも良かった。路上にいるその辺のヤツとでも一緒にやりたかった・・、確かそんな事言いながら、ポップグループ解散後、サイモンの結成したピッグバグはスタートしました。「パパズ・・」は当時、ホンダのCMで使われていました。当時、ホンダはマッドネスも起用したり、サントリーはウルトラヴォックス、ホルガーチューカイなんかも使っていましたねえ・・。CMカッコいい時代でした。そんな事より、このアルバムは、とにかくカッコいい！それにつきます！当時は、「パパズ・・」などは収録されておらず、シングル買わないといけませんでした。お買い得ですよ、これ。永遠の名作。エレキなマイルス好きもどうぞ！

ピッグ・バグというと、ホーン主体の、ファンキーなインスト・バンドくらいにしか思われていないかも知れませんが、やはりそこは元 the POP GROUP 、曲によってはかなり危ない波動を出してきてます。

従来は、テキトーなベストくらいしか出回っていなかったので、その辺が全くチェックできなかったのですが、このようにオリジナル＋ボーナスという形で出ましたので、一安心．．．という感じです。

３曲目や、特に４曲目の白日夢のような突き抜けた感じなど、ハマるとかなりコワイものがあります。
