彼らのこの作品では様々なタイプの曲が収録されています。オーケストラが入る曲やピチカートならではのベース音が耳に残る曲やゲンズブールのカバーなど。参加しているアーティストもテイ・トウワやファンタスティック・プラスティック・マシーンなどピチカートの曲をもっと最強にしてくれる人たちばかりです。個人的にこのアルバムはピチカートのたくさんあるアルバムの中でも上位に入るアルバムなので持ってない人やピチカート初心者にもオススメです。

ピチカート史上最もファンに愛されている名曲『悲しい歌』(ライブに何度も行って、小西氏がピアノ伴奏のみで何やろうか？とファンにリクエストし、みんながみんな『悲しい歌』と言っていたんだから間違いない）収録のアルバム。ちょうどこの頃は世界進出も果たし、二名体制になって少しテンポがよくなってきた頃。でも、なんというか、前作『OVERDOSE』同様、底抜けの明るさやユーモアは存在していない。全体的にはアルバムタイトル同様、ロマンティックというのが大きなテーマとして存在していて(ちょうどこの頃、80年代のニューロマンティックが再評価され始めていました。今田耕治&テイトーワのナウロマンティックもこの頃でした笑）少しモードの香りも漂うお洒落系の音なのですが、それを叩き壊すラストトラック『悲しい歌』。前作収録の『happy sad』の歌詞にある『嬉しいのに悲しくなるような』そんなテイストを見事に再現した歌で、そんなことは誰も言ってないし、小西氏もこの歌に関してのみの特別なコメントは出ていませんが、この歌はYMOでいうなら『CUE』的な存在ではないのかなぁ？と思います。この歌にたどり着くまで約10年。彼ら＝小西氏はようやくピチカートらしいポップスを表現できたんじゃないかなぁ、って思います。

このアルバムは、このアルバム自体で「ひとつの作品」ということが強調されていると思う。
#１の「ポプリ」と一番最後の「コーダ」が曲の雰囲気が似せてあり関連性が感じられて、
物語の始まりと終わりのような印象を持ちます。
ほかにもアルバムの途中や後半で、「ポプリ」
と少し似たような印象の「romantique96」や、「変奏曲」がはいっていたり、物語のナレーター
のような役割を果たしているように思えました。
最初の「ポプリ」の後が「めざめ」という曲で、
恋人たちの始まりを表すのに対して、
最後の「コーダ」の前の曲は別れを表す「悲しい歌」という曲だし。
アルバムの曲自体はそんなに耳につきやすい曲は入ってないと思ったけれど、曲それぞれにすごく特徴があって好きです。
特に、#11の「キャットウォーク」が好き。とってもオモシロい！
#6の、「アイスクリーム・メルティン・メロウ」もすごく幸せムードで好きだなぁって感じです。。全体的に曲も好きです。
とにかく、こんなアルバムあるんだぁ・・って思いました。すごく好きです。
