Essentially a greatest hits package, Capitol Punishment presents Megadeth highlights and also demonstrates, via a couple of new tracks, that sneering frontman Dave Mustaine hasn't lost his knack for steel-plated, fishhook riffs. The band's career can be broken into two separate parts: the early LA days and the Arizona relocation period. The early fury is illustrated by the likes of the high-speed "Holy Wars", the conspiratorial "Hanger 18" and the classic brain-shaker "Peace Sells (But Who's Buying?)". More recent material, while not quite as visceral, proves that Megadeth were always smarter than 99 percent of their metal peers. While stalwart supporters already know most of the material here, Capitol Punishment is a perfect sampler for those considering delving into Megadeth's lore. --Steffan Chirazi
