イギリス出身のテクノの魔術師、ノーマン・ロック(通称ファットボーイ・スリム)の『Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars』はめちゃくちゃバランスが悪く、ボーイズフレンドリーな前回リリースには足元にも及ばない。それでもいいなら、今までより軽いハウス・サヴィーでゴスペルの雰囲気が折衷した68分のジェットコースターののりが味わえる。また新たに「Rockafeller Skank」を作る必要はない。中には、いい感じにゆっくりと盛り上がっていくチューンもある。「Talking 'bout My Baby」は『Play』時代のモビーとケミカル・ブラザースの『Surrender』コラボのようなサウンド。 ジミー・モリソンの稀に見るアカペラヴォーカルをサンプリングしたスピリチュアルなトラック「Sunset (Bird of Prey)」も悪くない。この曲はアルバムからの最初のシングルで、ここでようやくブレイクビートも聴くことができるが、牽引力というよりほとんど補足的な役割。でもこれはファットボーイがポップミュージックを取り入れるからといってもっと激しく汚れた音楽ができないという意味ではない。Ya Mama は超捻じ曲げられたクレージーなビートがブレイクとキーキーとシンセが耳をつき、これを近くで聴いたお偉方や子犬を撹乱するだろう。「Star 69」のように、ただ汚い言葉を使ったばかなサンプリングをするためだけに存在するような超くだらない曲もいくつかあるが、逆にそれが他の優れた曲の引き立て役になっている。ハウス音楽に鼓舞された「Retox」は純粋なパーティーチューンだし、アルバムの中心核をなすスーパーバッドディスコファンキー「Weapon of Choice」 (ブーティー・コリンズとのコラボ)は最高の出来。希薄なダンスポップと有名ゲストの起用によって成功しようという企ては今までにも数多くなされてきたが、ファットボーイ・スリムはそれを芸術性を犠牲にせずに成し遂げた。マーシー・グレイが歌う2曲を聴くだけでもこのアルバムの価値はある。新しい試みと聴きやすい音楽。クックはその周辺を、狂気の科学者のような笑みを浮かべながら進み続けるだろう。

今回はメイシー・グレイをゲストヴォーカルとして歌唱力いきるＣＤになっとりますが、サンプリングばっかだった以前に比べて普遍性アップしたとおもう。誰でも聞けるぜひこれを。

2000年11月7日リリース。あらゆる要素という要素が詰め込まれた大傑作アルバム。

各曲が各々の引き立て役になるような構成になっていると思う。主役は『Weapon Of Choice』だと思うが他の曲もいずれも濃くて脇役が主役を食ってしまうイイドラマみたいな作品だ。でもやっぱり『Weapon Of Choice』がスパイク・ジョーンズが作ったクリストファー・オーケンのスゴイ踊りが観られる抜群のPVとコラボしたのがあのブーディー・コリンズという2点で圧倒的にお気に入りだ。スゴイ組み合わせだ、この3人。

次のお気に入りは『Drop The Hate』。変わってますかね。可能ならスパイク・ジョーンズに全曲のPVを作らせてみたかったな。

発売日即購入で聞いたときは今ひとつピンとこなかったんだけど、じわじわきますよ。今日よりも明日。明日よりもあさってのような。泣けます。そして暴れられます。MIXCD以外では一番好きなアルバムです。
