もともとこの作品のテーマを考えた場合、ファントムはエキセントリックで偏ったキャラクターであるべきだし、だからこそ、ラストではより深い感動を得るのです。ところが、ミュージカルが名声を博すにつれて、ファントムが見栄えも声もまあ実にかっこいいキャラクターになっていくこと！　それはそれで好きなのですが、やはりオリジナルがいちばん作品の世界を大事にしていると思うし、ウェーバーが構想した姿に近いのではないでしょうか。そのロンドン・オリジナル・キャストは、名優マイケル・クロフォードがファントムを、20代のサラ・ブライトマンがクリスティーヌを演じた永遠の名演。ただ、以前のCDは、途中に切れ目がなくて、曲の頭出しに苦労したものです。しかしリマスターされたこのCDは、そんな心配もなく、音の臨場感もぐっと増しています。それにしても、ウェーバーとサラ・ブライトマンの出会いが、この作品を生み出したこと（ミュージック・オブ・ザ・ナイトも、もとは彼女のために作曲された）は、80年代の音楽界最大のファンタジーかもしれません。

本当にドラマティックで、すごいです。
音も、キャストも文句ありません。
本物の舞台は劇団四季しか見ておりませんが、このＣＤはほぼ完全に物語が収録されており、カットされている部分は思い当たりません。
また、外箱（紙製）に入っていますが、ＣＤと一緒にちょっと厚みのある歌詞カード（？）がついております。

これもまた、全曲分の歌詞がついています。
さらにト書きまでついているので、物語の進行ももちろんばっちり。
本当に素晴らしいです。

80年代後半にこのアルバムを聴き、楽曲、歌唱、演奏とその完璧な内容に圧倒されました。「オペラ座の怪人」のCDは他にも今何種類か聴いていますが、やっぱり大本命はこのオリジナル・ロンドン・キャスト盤です。マイケル・クロフォードとサラ・ブライトマンの存在感は本当にすごいです。

映画のサントラ同様このロンドン・キャスト盤もアビイロード・スタジオでレコーディングされており、60人編成のオーケストラが使われています。キーボードには元ゾンビーズのロッド・アージェントが参加しており、彼は他のALW作品「ヴァリエーションズ」「キャッツ」にも参加しています。

初演から20年近く経った今、このミュージカルは、もはや「南太平洋」「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」「ウェスト・サイド物語」「マイ・フェア・レディ」などに匹敵する古典的名作になったと言っても過言ではないでしょう。
