This 1969 recording is a loose suite of pieces inspired by Martin Luther King and the struggle for black civil rights. Hancock wrote four of them and arranged bassist Buster Williams's "Firewater," expanding his working sextet to a nonet for the date with flute, bass clarinet, and bass trombone. The additional winds add delicacy and texture to an already powerful band, and the expanded palette allows Hancock to show untapped strengths as an orchestrator, enlarging the harmonic inference of strongly felt themes that are by turns majestic, assertive, and pensive.

A fine balance is maintained between compositional form and subtle voicings on one hand, and the turbulent, explosive energies in the music and the band, from the churning rhythms of Williams and drummer Albert Heath to the coiling snap of Joe Henderson's tenor. Maintaining that balance with Hancock is underrated trumpeter Johnny Coles, who's superb in leads as well as solos, bringing all the experience he gained with Gil Evans and Charles Mingus to bear on Hancock's work. The final recording of Hancock's 1960s Blue Note tenure, this is ambitious and accomplished work. The CD reissue adds two alternate takes to the original LP. The shorter version of "The Prisoner" is notable for Henderson's intense, fluid solo. --Stuart Broomer

　11人編成からなる Hancock の計算された音作りのなかで Joe Henderson(ts)、Johnny Coles(flugelhorn) の個性的なソロも光る、69年４月録音はブルーノートレーベルにおける最終作。各曲のテーマ、緩急、雰囲気の差異はアンサンブルの響きの中に吸収され、曲単位でアルバムを構成するというよりトータルとしてアルバムが提示されることから、全体を通して程よい緊張感とリラックスが続く。68年3月「Speak Like A Child」をちょっと前衛に推し進めたような心地よさのポスト・バップ。
　既に69年２月に Miles Davis「In A Silent Way」セッションを経験した Hancock は、書きためた楽曲をここで一気に放出・精算して「Fat Albert Rotunda」「Mwaddishi」へと舵を切ることになる。ジャケットは既にそっちの方向に向いていて、確かに、もしこれが「Speak Like A Child」なみのジャケットだったらもっと注目されていたはずのアルバムだ。

このアルバムは人気作『Speak Like A Child』に続いて発表されたもので、その続編であるとされています。確かに曲調が似ていて、強化されたホーンセクションの分厚いハーモニーが特徴的です。また、フリューゲルホーンやテナーサックスのソロがフィーチャーされた反面、ハービーのピアノ・ソロが少なくなっています。

これが『Speak Like A Child』に比べて人気がないのは、ジャケットカバーが Lovely でも Romantic でもなく、ハービーのピアノもリリシズムにあふれていないからでしょう。

しかし、このアルバムには意味が込められています。冒頭曲の「I Have A Dream」がそれを示唆するように、録音の１年前、１９６８年に銃弾に倒れたマーチン・ルーサー・キング牧師へのオマージュになっていて、アルバム全体が組曲として構成されているのです。そのことを思いながら聴くと、曲たちが少しだけ違って聞こえるかもしれません・・・

名盤　"Speak Like a Child"　に続き、69年に発表された本盤。
前作の路線を引き継ぎつつ、内省的なメロディと、より繊細さを増したホーン・アレンジが最高に美しい、
紛れもない傑作ですが、他のレビュアーも書かれている通り、残念ながら不当に過小評価されている
アルバムです。

本盤は、ハンコックがマイルスのもとを離れて初めて作ったアルバムです。
同時期、マイルスは、かの歴史的名盤　"Bithes Brew"　の制作に取り掛かりますが、そのキーボード
を担ったのは、黄金の60年代セクステットを支えた彼ではなく、チック・コリアとザヴィヌルでした。

そしてこのアルバムを最後に、彼はブルー・ノートを去り、次作　"Fat Albert Rotunda"　から、あの
"Head Hunters"　に至るまで、アフロ・アメリカンとしてのアイデンティティを意識した作品作りに
傾倒していきます。

１曲目のタイトル　"I Have a Dream"　が示唆するように、前年のマーティン・ルーサー・キング
暗殺という、黒人解放運動の一つの転機をモチーフに据えていますが、同時に彼は、自分自身の
人生の転機をも、強く意識していたに違いありません。

また、69年はウッド・ストックの年でもあり、白人・黒人問わず、アメリカの若者たちの理想がピーク
を迎えるとともに、現実の壁にぶつかりつつあった時期でもありました。
"Speak Like a Child"　と本盤で、自らの無邪気な少年時代に別れをつげた彼は、よりしたたかに、
貪欲に、自らの音楽を追求していく決意を固めるのです。
ハンコック、29歳の春でした。。。　

なんてことを考えると、やっぱり無視できない１枚です！
