Vangelisというアーティストを知れば知るほど、｢最高傑作｣という言葉が使い難くなる、という事は、ファンの方々であればご理解頂けると思います。
そしてこのアルバムは｢最高傑作かもしれない｣と言えたりしてしまうのも、ファンの方々なら、ある程度ご理解いただけるのではないかと・・・。

このアルバムは、今やあまりにも有名な｢メインタイトル｣の、壮言で繊細で美しく力強い旋律で幕を開けるのですが、アナログLP時代はB面を丸々使った｢Chariots of fire｣という組曲が凄まじい仕上がりなのです。
｢単なる映画のサウンドトラック｣では当然ありません。
見事なオリジナル･アルバムです。

発売当時、全米を含み世界中でチャートのトップまで上り詰めたという事が、｢映画は観てないけど、サントラは買った｣という人たちが如何に多かったか、が判ります。
とはいえ｢音楽が良かったから、映画も観た｣という人々(私も含み)も、その映画の素晴らしさにビックリした、という嬉しい現象も多かったと思います。

アカデミー賞で｢ヴァンジェリス｣と発音されまくり、後に｢私の名前はヴァンゲリスだ｣とステイトメントを出していたのが、懐かしい記憶です。

確かに｢最高傑作｣であるかどうかは判りません。
他にも凄い作品はありますから・・・。
しかし、Vangelisの素晴らしさは、この一枚に充分集約されている事も確かです。

形態がどうであれ(この場合は映画サントラですが)、自分の音楽への取り組み方、決して商業主義ではない芸術への探求心、そして溢れ出る美しいばかりの旋律、そういったものが、このアルバムから、充分感じられるのです。
是非、聴いてみて下さい！。
