【プロフィール】
1974年に米国ロサンゼルスで結成。オリジナル・メンバーはデヴィッド・リー・ロス(vo)、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン(g)、マイケル・アンソニー(b)、アレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレン(ds)。78年にアルバム『炎の導火線』でデビュー。エディのテクニカルで超絶的なギターとデヴィッドのパワフルなヴォーカル、派手なアクションで人気を集め、83年発表の6作目『1984』と初の全米ナンバー・ワンとなったシングル「ジャンプ」の大ヒットで頂点に立つ。86年にデイヴが脱退してソロ活動を始めたため、後任のヴォーカリストに元モントローズのサミー・ヘイガーが加入、アメリカを代表する正統的ハード・ロック・バンドへと成長する。サミーの脱退後、98年に元エクストリームのゲイリー・シェローンが参加、『ヴァン・ヘイレンIII』を発表するが、ゲイリーは脱退。エディの病気治療のため活動停止していたが、サミーが復帰、2004年に全米ツアーを行ない、活動を再開している。

９８０年リリースのサードアルバム・・・オープニングナンバーから堂々の貫禄を見せつける内容です、気合十分！！爆発的なヒット曲は含みませんが、トータルな意味でロックしていて強力なサウンドです。４曲目「ロメオデライト」の疾走感はいつ聴いても気持ちいい・・・感性にまかせたギターソロがっこいい！！５曲目インストから６曲目「ロスオブコントロール」の流れは、またまたエドワードヴァンヘイレン炸裂のスピーディーなナンバー！！個人的には、ラスト９曲目「インアシンプルライム」の無条件なかっこよさに痺れました・・・この１曲だけでも買いのアルバムだと思います。このアルバムは地味な印象がありますが、アメリカンロックの名盤だと思います・・・演奏・曲がとにかくいい！！ヴァンヘイ!!レンの魅力はやはりデイヴリーロスとエドワードヴァンヘイレンのマジックなのだと、再び聴いてみて強く感じました。

このアルバムはすごくマイナーなイメージがありますが、個人的にはバンヘイレンで一番のアルバムだと思ってます。他のアルバムの様な（戒厳令は例外）陽気なイメージはなく、ブルーな雰囲気がたまらん。
とにかくそれぞれの曲の構成、ギタープレーが超かっちょえーーー。
特にSimple Rhymeの静と動の融合とドラマチックでかっこよすぎるギターソロ。
ＲｏｍｅｏＤｅｌｉｇｈｔのぞくぞくスピード感を持ったギターリフとデビッドのグッドタイミングの唸り声。
ロスオブコントロールの獣の叫びの様なエロいバッキングギター、Take your whisky〜 のブルージーなソロ！
たまりません。高速はかっ飛ばしながら聞くともう最高！

ヴァンヘイレンの作品の中ではブルージーな感じの曲が多いです。初期のライヴではお馴染みの「Everybody Wants Some」などが有名ですが、個人的に「Take Your Whiskey Home」が超カッコよくて好きです！ヴァンヘイレンのファンなら☆4つです。
