ロッドの最高傑作だと個人的には思います。ソロ・アルバムなのだけれど、バンドとしての一体感が聞くものにグッと迫ってきます。これは、カーマイン・アピスのドラムがリズムをビシッと締めているからだと思う。壮快な「ホット・レッグス」に始まり、アコースティックな名曲「ユア・イン・マイ・ハート」、カーマイン・アピスが在籍したヴァニラ・ファッジの名曲「ユー・キープ・ミー・ハンギンオン」、後半の泣きのギターが美しい「アイ・ワズ・オンリー・ジョーキング」まで剛柔取り混ぜて飽きること無く一気に聞かせます。何度聞いても色褪せないこのアルバムこそ名盤と呼ぶにふさわしいアルバムです。一家に１枚です。現在のロッドは年相応の？往年の名曲をカバーしたポピュラー歌手の路線で成功している様ですが、個人的には年を取っても、ロックシンガーで輝いていて欲しかったです。このアルバムがロックシンガーとしては頂点の時期だったと思います。

もう30年程前になりますが、俺が高校生の時、当時待ちに待ったロッドの新作（本作品）が出て、
毎日レコードが擦り切れるぐらい聞いていたな〜。
ロッドの作品の中でも、これは特に思い出深いアルバムでした。
６曲目の「if loving you is wrong」は特に最高で、鳥肌が立つぐらいロッドのヴォーカルに聴き惚れていました。全く歌詞の意味も分からないのに、愛する女性に訴える曲とかってに解釈して、好きな女の子を想いながら、涙をこらえてこの曲を聴いていました(笑)
また、俺の影響でロッドを聴くツレ達も増えて、よく教室でこのアルバムをかけていたのですが、アルバムの最後の曲「i was only joking」の、美しい泣きがはいる間奏のギター場面で、俺はギターに興味がなくてやってないですが、今はやりのエアーギターをツレ達が汗をかきながら必死に真似てました(笑)
俺にとってほんとに懐かしい青春時代を象徴するアルバムです。

Every Picture Tells a Storyと並ぶ彼の最高傑作。ノリノリのロックンロールナンバー Hot Legsからラストを飾るアコースティックバラードI Was Only Jokingまで、密度の濃い曲がビッシリ。それまでのイラストの凝ったジャケットではないんですが、何の変哲もない素顔の写真から、彼のこのアルバムに対する自負と自信がひしひしと伝わってきます。アメリカに渡ってからの彼のアルバムはAtlantic Crossingからの3枚を聞けば十分なんですが、その中でもこのアルバムの出来は出色です。これ以降の彼は似非R&Bシンガーとして、MTV時代にマッチした、いかにもうさん臭いシンガーに成り下がってしまいます。一時持ち直しそうになりますが、最近はまたオールディーズを歌うという、さらにうさん臭い路線に突き進んでいます。たぶんもうこの路線に戻ることもないでしょうから、皆さん！このアルバムを聞きながら往年の名ロックンローラーを偲ぶことにしましょう。
