【プロフィール】
1945年1月10日生まれ、英国ロンドン出身。18歳の時にジミー・パウエル&ファイヴ・ディメンションズに参加したのをきっかけに音楽活動をスタート。スティーム・パケットなど、いくつかのグループを経て、66年にジェフ・ベック・グループにヴォーカリストとして加入。69年にはスモール・フェイセズ(フェイセズに改名)に加入すると同時にソロ活動もスタートさせ、70年にアルバム『ロッド・スチュワート・アルバム』でソロ・デビュー。71年にシングル「マギー・メイ」がアメリカとイギリスで同時にNo.1を記録する偉業を達成。その後も「セイリング」ほか数多くの大ヒット曲を放ち、ハイ・ペースでアルバム・リリースを重ねている。80年代以降も大規模なコンサートを開催するなど、全世界のトップ・スターとして君臨。2001年からは自身の新たなライフ・ワークとも言えるスタンダード集『ザ・グレイト・アメリカン・ソングブック』を発表し、高い評価を得ている。

ロッドがひょいっと大西洋を越えてからの３作（これと「Night on The Town」と「Foot Loose & Fancy Free」）が彼の全盛期だと思っていて、個人的には「ロッド黄金の３部作」と名付けて愛聴している。っていうとコアなファンから「いいやロッドは英国時代」「いいやフェイセズ時代」とか怒られそうで、まあ実際そうかもしれないけれども、でもとにかくこのころはかっこいい。１~５のFast Sideもエネルギッシュで良いが、どちらかというと６~１０のSlow Sideの方が好き。超有名曲「Sailing」だけでなく有名曲「I Don't Want To Talk About It」や、「This Old Heart Of Mine」（アイズレーズのカヴァー）も聴かせるじゃないか。でも切なげな「It's Not The Spotlight」がいちばん好き。

「これ１枚で名前が永遠に」って書くと他のファンの方には叱られるかも知れませんが、ロッドのこれまでの歴史をみてみると、これ１枚で、知名度も音楽的評価も全てが変わったと思っている。他にもいい作品が一杯あるけれども、ロッドの魅力はやはりこの１枚に尽きます。サポートするバック･ミュージシャンも素晴らしく、そして不朽のナンバーになってしまった「セイリング」がとどめです。こう書くとそれまでのイギリスのソロとフェイセス時代が駄目なのかと言われそうですが、いやいやその時代も素晴らしい活躍であったのは皆さんご存知のことですが、特筆すべきはイギリスにおける精力的な活動のその後でこのような作品を世に出したことが他にない事例だと思っている。彼ほど活動期間が長く、出したレコード（ＣＤ）の枚数も多くかつ名盤と呼ばれるものも多い歌手は例をみない。しかも自作と他人の作品を上手くブレンドする能力はもう誰も真似できない。

ロッドの最高傑作と呼べる作品の一つ。ファーストサイドとスローサイドに(LPでは)キレイに分けて楽曲を収録。

前半のロックナンバーも、もちろん素晴らしいが、ロッドはやはりバラードにつきる。後半の「もう話したくない」からは、じっくりロッドの甘くソウルフルなボーカルに浸れる。アイズレーブラザーズのカバー「ディス・オールド・ハート・オブ・マイン」も、ロッドが歌えば紛れも無く彼の曲になってしまう。そしてラストは説明の必要がない名曲(カバーだが)「セイリング」。

例え、「セイリング」のためにこのアルバムを購入したとしても、それは幸せな事だ。だって、それ以上に素晴らしい楽曲の詰まった名盤を手にするのだから。
