   イギリスを代表するギタリストの1人、マーク・ノップラー率いるダイアー・ストレイツのデビュー作である。78年に母国でリリースされたが、反応はあまりよいものではなく、このままバンド名が意味する「絶体絶命」の道をたどるかのようにも思われた。
   しかし、<6>がオーストラリアでブレイクすると急上昇。特にマークの個性的なギター・プレイと渋いヴォーカルに注目が集まった。翌年アメリカでブレイクするころには、名だたる多くのミュージシャンから、ゲストのお誘いを受けるまでになっていたという。（春野丸緒）

　若い人にはあまり馴染みのないギタリスト，マーク・ノップラー。
　当時珍しいフィンガー・ピッキングでエレキギターやドブロを使いこなすスタイルで，頻繁にラジオでオンエアされたりエリッククラプトンのようにもてはやされたりすることはありませんでしたが，その表現力─スライド，トリル，チョーキング，ビブラートなどの基本的なテクニックをこれほど正確にしかも丁寧に聴かせる人は当時珍しく，パンクや早弾きにスポットが当たっていた時代　とても新鮮でした。ライ・クーダーやJ,J,ケイル，ロイ・ブキャナンやポール・サイモンなどと同様，他のミュージシャンに影響を与えたギタリストの一人でしょう。当初イギリスで人気が出なかったことが不思議な気もします。

　彼はカントリー界の大御所チェット・アトキンスと師弟関係にあり(ポリスマンズ・サード・ボールとしてアムネスティから二人のライブ演奏がリリースされてます)，彼の影響を特に大きく受けています。地味に自分のスタイルを貫いていた彼は　その後AORの代表的グループであったスティーリー・ダンにレコーディングに招かれたり，チーフタンズと共演するなどケルト音楽を広く知らしめるきっかけを作ったりと，このアルバムをきっかけに飛躍し始めます。21世紀の今日でもまったく古さを感じさせない，ボリュームを上げてじっくり向き合ってみる価値のある一枚です。彼にぴったりな仕事といえば，映画音楽(ローカル・ヒーローのサントラ)も忘れることができません。
　このアルバム，クラプトンがアルバート・リーを従えて武道館で演奏したSetting me upも収められています(Just one nightに収録)が，こちらがオリジナル。最後の一曲まで一切手抜きなし，情熱が感じられる一枚です。洋楽が好きなすべての方に　強くお勧めします

時はパンク全盛のイギリス、演奏力の低下、稚拙さを嘆いていた僕が小躍りして聞き込んだ忘れられない名作。やはりこういうバンドもいないとね。「気持ちだけでは音楽やないで」と再認識させてくれた素晴らしいバンドであり、素晴らしい名作です。フィンガー・ピッキングというロックシーンでは珍しい奏法ですが、なかなか粋な音です。ボーカルも渋い。ダイア・ストレイツといえばライブ・エイドで演奏された「悲しきサルタン」も是非見て欲しいです。その頃には、もうギタリストとしては大御所の風格すら漂っております。でもこのレコードが売れたという事実が、当時の音楽ファンもまだまだ捨てたものでないと思った記憶があります。今聞いてもいいです。ジャケットが意味深です。

この作品の良さは他の方が書かれていますのであえて書きません。ノップラーの寝る間も惜しんで練習したギターにそそぐ情熱や、しっかりとした夢があったからこそ出来上がった作品でしょう。Dire Straitsのアルバム（ライブ盤を除く）の中では”Making Movies”もいいですが、ハードロック、パンク等のあの時代にあえてこの音で勝負したこちらが一番ではないでしょうか。今はソロで活躍しているノップラー、ぜひライブで”Sultans of Swing”や”Setting Me Up ”のフィンガー・ピッキングを観て聴いてみたいものです。日本ではほとんど忘れられているDire Straitsとノップラー、もう一度思い出してもらえないものでしょうか。
