晩年に差しかかったチェットが、１９７４年にクリード・テイラーのプロデュースで制作した１枚。ヒットを連発するクリード・テイラーらしく、そつなく聴き易くまとめている。しかし、一見何気ないイージーリスニング風のチェットのトランペットは、人生の哀しみや苦しみを背後にたたえている。と、言っても、聴いていて暗くならず、心の奥に暖かいものがこみ上げてくる。ロン・カーター（ベース）ジャック・デジョネット（ドラム）、ポール・デスモンド（アルト・サックス）、ボブ・ジェームス（ピアノ）ヒューバート・ロウス（フルート）と他のプレーヤーも豪華。一曲目の「枯葉」と「タンジェリン」を聴いて欲しい。（松本敏之）

1974年収録メンバーはP.デスモンド(as)、B.ジェームス（E.piano)、J.ディジョネット(ds)、D.フリードマン(vib)、R.カーター（ｂｓ）アレンジはD.セベスキーとお馴染みのメンバー。　デスモンドもC.ベーカーもすでに円熟の時代に入っていたのだろうか。圧巻はAutumn Leaves（７：０５）。スリリングなアドリブが次から次へと続いていき、聴く方のどんどんその世界に入っていく。バックのB.ジェームス、J.ディジョネット、Ｒ．カーターのリズムセクションも一団となって突き進んでいきAutumn　Leavesは熱く、クールに燃え上がっていく。もう2度とこんな演奏を聴く事はできない。

５０年代のチェット・ベーカーは典型的な人気先行型であった。特徴のあるウォームなサウンド、シンプルでムーディなフレーズ、映画俳優を思わせる容姿など、どれをとっても彼をスターダムに押し上げる要素にあふれていた。しかし同時にそれは演奏者としての苦悩の始まりであり、そのギャップを埋めるために例にもれず麻薬に手を出すというお決まりのコースを彼も辿ってしまった。チャーリー・パーカー、アート・ペッパー、スタン・ゲッツそしてマイルスやロリンズ、コルトレーンさえも・・・。多くのジャズマンがそうであるようにチェットも麻薬と戦い、その苦悩、葛藤の中からこの快作を生み出した。ドン・セベスキーの軽妙かつ洗練されたアレンジにロン・カーター、スティーブ・ガッド、ジャック・デジョネット、ボブ・ジェームといった実力派リズムセクション、ポール・デスモンド、ヒューバート・ロウズといった一級のホーン奏者を従え、ＣＴＩならではのメロウで心地よいアルバムに仕上げた。デスモンド、ラウズとチェットの共演というだけで甘くうっとりとする世界が容易に想像できるが、チェットのボーカルも混ぜ合わせている本作の人気は推して知るべし、７０年代後半どれだけジャズ喫茶で聴いたことか。硬派のファンにはやや眉をひそまれはしたが、演奏の質は十分高いことと心地よさには抵抗しがたく、すごくいい気分で眠ってしまうことしばしばであった。今は亡きチェット・ベーカーのカムバック後の代表作であり、ＣＴＩの人気盤として忘れられない。
