実は、私はこのライブを聴いていました。貞夫さんのソロで I Can't Get Startedから続いてAu Prevaveに至る部分は、まさに火が着いたように吹きまくり大興奮！！今でも当時の場面が目の前に蘇ってきます。これは、かくれた名盤!!

アルト・サックスの巨星、チャーリー・パーカーへのオマージュとしてのコンサート録音。ナベサダが最も尊敬し、影響を受けた天才だけに思い入れも大きい。あまた存在するアルト奏者で、パーカーに憧れ、その影に怯えなかったものはほとんどいなかったであろう。アート・ペッパー、ジャッキー・マックリーン、チャーリー・マリアーノ、フィル・ウッズetc.そんな中でもナベサダはしっかりとした個性と優れた理念を持ったインプロバイザーであり世界屈指のパーカー派アルト・サキソフォニストだといえる。パーカーズ・ムード、ア・ソング・フォー・バード、エヴリシング・ハップンズ・トゥ・ミーと快調にプログラムを進めていたが、「言い出しかねて」に入って異変が起きる。突然無伴奏ソロを取り始めたナベサダは、他のメンバーの入り込む隙間を与えず、とうとう最後まで無伴奏で通してしまったのだ。そのソロは素晴らしく、予定通りの行動に思えたかもしれない。続くオー・プリヴァーヴでも、ソロは続き、独壇場でコンサートは進行する。驚いたのは日野皓正をはじめとする他のメンバーで、入り込もうとするが、なかなか糸口を見せない。最後は、何とかリズムセクションに譲った。その後の日野のソロは、なんとも頼りなく思い切りのランニングスタイルである。もちろん実力者だけにそれなりのソロをしているのだが、ここは有名な日野不調説によると、当時演奏のやり過ぎで、唇のしまりがなく、とてもまともなソロが取れない状況であったと聞く。そういえば、マイルスが「死刑台のエレベーター」を収録したときに、直前の食事時にナイフで唇を切って血を流しながらプレイをしたという話を思い出した。ジャズとはこのような逸話とハプニングによってさらに神話化されるのであろう。いずれにしても日本のジャズ界にとって記念すべきモメントであり、日本のジャズの高水準はナベサダによって達成されたという証をここに見るのである。

最近の貞夫さんの演奏とは違い、この貞夫さんの演奏はチャーリー・パーカーを全面に出し、文字通り”吹きまくる”貞夫さんだ。一説にはメンバーの不調をカバーするためにやたらと長いサックスソロを強いられていた・・、という話もある。しかし、しゃかりきになって吹きまくるその演奏には、何か熱いものが伝わってくる。やはり日本のジャズリーダーは貞夫さんだ！
