延々と続く英国音楽史にその名を刻むであろうスーパーグループ、スタイル・カウンシルの2ndであり最高傑作。楽曲バラエティの豊富さ、アレンジの完成度、バンドの音のまとまり…どれを取っても完璧に近く、アメリカの天才ユニット「スティーリー・ダン」後期の各アルバムと互角に亙りあうレベルに到達した仕上がりになっている。絶対的柱であるポール・ウェラーだけに留まらず、ミック・タルボットのキーボード、ＤＣリーのヴォーカルもポール同様立派にアルバムを支えている。
アルバムの中身とは直接関係ない話だが、オープニングを飾る「Homebreaker」が何とも気になる存在だ。この曲は国の経済政策によって職を失ってしまった主人公の話。彼の兄は働く為に既に家を出ており、そして主人公もまた同様に家を出る決意をする。父は30年勤めた会社を解雇され、天と自分の女房を罵る毎日。母は息子達の昔の写真を眺めてばかり。政府に愛も力も根こそぎ奪われてしまった彼は「どんな愛も俺の憎しみは消せない」と歌う。
この作品は10年前の作品で当時のサッチャー首相の政策を辛辣に批判した歌だが、そう遠くない将来、日本にもこのような話が当てはまる時代が来るのではないか。中央と地方のコントラストは、そうなるべき下地が既に出来上がっている事を証明している。
ポピュラー音楽は「頑張れソング」を連発して金儲けをする為の手段ではない。人々の魂から湧上って来る想いを形にし世論を形成させる事だって可能な事を、今のレコード会社各社はもっと認識するべきだ。

ジャム、ソロ時代も含めたポールウェラーのキャリアの中でも最高傑作です。とにかくメロディーが素晴らしい。「余裕で軽く作ったんだけど」とでも言いたげなアレンジもビシバシ決まってます。
そして、ＤＣリー。彼女のヴォーカルが一番キュートなのもこのアルバムです。

「シャウト・トゥ・ザ・トップ」…やはりこの曲への思い入れが強いのです。現在でこそ、テレビ番組やCMなんかにも使われ、かなり知名度は有りますが、クールな情熱と言うのか、当時、学生だった私にとってはかけがえのない一曲なのでした。確か、英オリジナル盤では収録されず、日本盤レコードでは(M6)と差し替えて収録されていたのですが、周知の通り、CDではラストを飾っています。このアルバムは「〜タンブリング・ダウン」で終わるべきなので、ついつい違和感を感じてしまうのは私だけでしょうか?この名曲がボーナストラック扱いとは…。とはいえ、ベストではなく、このアルバムで聴きたいし…。いや…。まあ、この曲は私の心の中にある、と言うことで。 さて、「シャウト〜」以外も聴きどころ満載の本作なのですが、前作『カフェ・ブリュ』で感じた、スリリングなワクワク感は薄れたものの、ポリティカルなメッセージ性はそのままに、楽曲の完成度や安定感は高く、よりクールに、より情熱的に、よりスタイリッシュに進化しているように思います。 また、ジャケットのショップは、彼らのルーツや趣味が垣間見れて、なかなか興味深いです。
