A quarter of a century may have passed since his untimely death, but new bands continue to line up to acknowledge Tim Buckley's influence. Yet few ever cover his songs, deterred by the prospect of comparisons or having to match their writer's vocal gymnastics. Finding acts prepared to participate on this tribute proved hard going for US label Manifesto, hence the absence of this obvious Buckleyites, Coldplay, who declined to take part. That leaves an interesting, eclectic, but, it must be said, fairly low-key set of acts, many with associations to 4AD, prepared to stand up and be counted. Geneva's Andrew Montgomery was destined to flex his angelic voice on something like "Pleasant Street" and the highly impressive Cousteau bring rich gravitas to the aching "Blue Melody", but former Cocteau Simon Raymonde and Bel Canto's Anneli Drecker provide the highpoint of the 17 tracks here with a shivering, mesmerising "Morning Glory". Performed with deep affection, Sing A Song For You should drive people back to the originals if nothing else. --Mike Pattenden
