Strange as it seems now, the last album John Lennon released in his lifetime was intended as a comeback, or rather as a parting wave at retirement: "Watching the Wheels" and "Beautiful Boy" celebrate the joys he found outside the star system, and "(Just Like) Starting Over" is a slightly awkward rocker about rejoining the domestic world that's also sort of about rejoining the pop world. The studio-pro arrangements are a little too slick, but Lennon rarely sounded happier. Ono, whose songs alternate with his in a series of thematic diptychs, was taking a stab at channeling her artier impulses into pop and is generally less successful--her voice works in a context of art-weirdness, but not as well in conventional tunes. This 2000 remastered reissue is fleshed out with a demo of "Help Me to Help Myself" and Ono's solo version of "Walking on Thin Ice," which was recorded on the same day her husband was shot to death. --Douglas Wolk

‘スターティング・オーヴァー’は文字通り「再出発」ソングだったが、ヨーコの作品も含め、アルバム全体にポジティヴな「安息感」が見えた。『ヌートピア宣言』ではまだ「思想」だったものが、「自然な実践」になった事の証明なのではなかろうか。安心できる。でも、やっぱり、‘ウーマン’を聴くと、今でも涙が出てくるよ。

　「パパはビートルズだったの！」「Yellow Submarine」を観たショーン君の言葉が引き金となり、５年の沈黙を破り、本作が誕生したというのがこれまでの定説だったが、実際はバミューダ諸島にクルージングに出かけた折、嵐に遭遇し、なんとか九死に一生を得るが、そこでの生死をさまよう様な体験から自己を根底から見つめ直し、その結果、作品が次々わき上がってきたというのが真相の様だ。アルバムタイトルも当地で見つけた花の名前から命名したとのこと。レコーディングのため、NYに戻りスタジオ入りする訳だが、共同プロデューサーに名を連ねているジャック・ダグラスなる人物とはどういう関係でどういう風にプロデュースを依頼するに至り、バンドの面々としてチープトリックのメンバーらを起用した理由は定かではない。ご存じの方がいたら是非ご教示願いたい所である。ＥＭＩ脱退後はフリーであったが、契約成立したゲフィンを選んだ理由は同社が作品を聞かずに承諾したからとの事。（他社はデモを聴きたがった）ジャケットは篠山紀信氏による。サウンドはこれまでになくソリッドな感触で、当時の言葉で言うならニューウェイブテイストな曲が目立つのが特徴である。イマジンの時同様、洋子さんの意見具申が相当大きかったことも推測される。
　さて、本作は夫婦の対話がコンセプトになっており、２人のヴォーカルが交互に収録されているが、洋子さんの部分をカットし、ジョンのパートだけを切り抜いて聴くファンが少なからずいるようだが、これでは本作を鑑賞したことにはならない。例えば人気の高いM10のアンサーソングとしてのM11の内容だが、歌詞をご覧になれば理解していただけると思うが、そこでは夫と息子への深い深い愛情が歌われているし、ジョンが続いてカバーするM13同様、楽曲としてのクォリティーも極めて高くジョンの作品に全くといっていい程ひけをとっていないし、詞の内容も深く、聴く者をうならせるものがある。多くのリスナーが洋子さんを受け付けないのは、過去のライヴでの「叫び」や本作のM2にあるのだろう。特にM2は日本語でそういう場面を口にしているので、我々日本人に、「さあ聴けそして感動しろ」と言われても確かに無理がある。しかしこういうリアリズムというのは文学・絵画・映画・音楽の世界にはいくらでもあるのではなかろうか。アダルトのようにそういうことを目的にしているわけではないし、あの偉大なるジョンと洋子なのである。自分を熱心なレノンファンと自称するなら、条件反射的に拒絶するのではなく、彼らの活動を優しく見守ろうではないか。さらに全曲とも２人の装飾脚色のないただただ正直な心が歌われているのだ。Ｍ５では、離れていく洋子さんに必死にしがみつくジョンの、その返答としてＭ６ではジョンに（一時的に）愛想をつかした洋子さんのストレートな気持ちが歌われている。個人的には、Ｍ５での「Stop bleeding now!　（流れる血を止めてくれ！）」の部分はあまりにも痛々しくて聴くたびに涙が出る。また思わず１２月８日に救急車で運ばれる場面を勝手に想像してしまうのだ。本当に痛々しい曲だ。
　個人的に最も好きなのは、Ｍ８だ。これは、表面的には隠遁生活時代の事を取り上げているが、Strawberry Fields Forever同様「自分独自の世界観」歌っており、全作品群の中で２番目に好きな曲である。（１番はStrawberry Fields...）
　戦いを終えたジョンが家庭の幸せに目を向けた最初のアルバムでもあり、「ジョンの魂」同様全くもって自分をさらけ出しているアルバムである。またボーナストラックとして洋子さんの「Walking On Thin Ice」が収録されている。これは死の数時間前にジョン自らのプロデュースで録音されたものである。しかも凶弾に倒れた時、彼はこのテープを抱きかかえていたのである。本作はそういうアルバムなのだ！　貴方が熱心なファンなら絶対に飛ばし聴きはしてはならないアルバムなのである。

ショーンの「パパはビートルズだったの？」がジョンの活動再開のきっかけという話についてヨーコは懐疑的らしい。「自分は散文的な人間になってしまって、詩を書くのが面倒になった」とぼやくジョンに、ヨーコが「だったら散文で曲を書けばいいじゃない」と言ったというエピソードを披露している。この話はヨーコの自己顕示な感もあるが、本作でのジョンの着想を物語るものではあると思う。
『アビイロード』から『ジョンの魂』で見られたような言葉を削って直截さを目指すリアリズムとは正反対の、饒舌体散文調ロックンロール。家庭生活のなかで思ったことを日記のように曲に書いて、それが名曲佳曲になっている作品と言えるかもしれない。
Womanが僕の一番のお気に入りで、ビートルズのDear Prudenceにも通じるような少しルーズなリフの刻みかたが心地よい。ジョンの曲にかんしては５点満点。
