『メロウ・ゴールド』と同時期にインディーズからリリースされたこの『ステレオパセティック・ソウルマニュレ』の特徴は、『メロウ』の“B面”的位置にあって、ボツネタ、即興ネタのたぐいを寄せ集めていること、です。

楽曲それぞれの特徴については、以下のように申し上げればよいでしょうか。トラック１、４、８、１５、２１、２２、２４、２５はノイズ、多重録音。２、５、７、１２、１９、２０、２３はカントリー。３、１３は違いはあれともにノイジーなパンク。６、１０、１４はフォーク。９、１８はソウル／ファンクなポップス。１１、１６はブルース。１７はインストゥルメンタルの賛美歌。

さて、もちろん、『ステレオパセティック』は、ベック・ファンにとってはこれもまた、味わい深いアルバムです。まず、２、３、１４、２３などでは、『ワン・フット・イン・ザ・グレイヴ』、『ミューテイションズ』、『シー・チェンジ』を思わせる“ヴォーカリスト、ギタリスト、ベック”が堪能できるという理由で。次に、２、３、４、７、１０、１４は、ベックがライヴでけっこう演奏する、もしくは演奏したナンバーであるという理由で。そういう意味では、『ステレオパセティック』は、ベック来日のさいにライヴに足を運ぶことを考えるほどのファンにとっては一度は聴いておくべきアルバムではあります。

とはいえ、『メロウ・ゴールド』から『オディレイ』にかけての時期の“カリスマ、ベック”に対する熱狂が去った今では、『ステレオパセティック』は、やはり一般リスナーにとっては必須アイテムではありません。そのため、四つ星です。

なお、現在は在庫切れ状態もしくは廃盤になった日本盤にさえ、歌詞はついていませんでした。しかし、ベックの場合は、歌詞はすべて公式HPの“ディスコボックス”（ディスコグラフィ）にアップされています。そちらで歌詞をご参照ください。
