Sounding like Shakespearian-lite, this romantic comedy sees four young guys all in love with one gal (Gabrielle Anwar), but kept by a mutual promise from pursuing her. Translated into music, a frequently French design underlies the gentle whimsy. Circa the mid-1980s, Danny Elfman's Pee Wee's Big Adventure score created a resurgence of interest in the styles of Georges Delerue and Nino Rota, a sort of Big Top light-heartedness. You will find that here (e.g., "Wake Up") alongside another 1980s staple, the sax and drum set-combo is backed by strings ("Early Row"). But to call this score behind the times is actually to pay it a compliment. This style--long since superseded--is a far better method of cracking the trickiness of making the music itself inherently comedic ("Rush to the Hospital" being a riot). With this album, Poledouris is miles away from the likes of Starship Troopers; it's half an hour of jazzy, smooth 'n' smoochy fun. --Paul Tonks
