   1999年の『Dead Bees On A Cake』に続いてリリースされた本作は、デイヴィッド・シルヴィアンの旧作からシングル曲、ライヴテイク、変わり種の曲を集めたコンピレーション盤だ。1970年代から80年代にかけてカルト的人気を誇ったジャパンを脱退してからのち、シルヴィアンはロックとポップスの弱点にひたすらメスを入れ、何度となく鮮やかな成果をあげてきた。収録曲の大半は本作のために作り直されているが、その最新の解釈でも、オリジナルにあった優しくメランコリックな詩情は少しも損なわれていない。

   一連のコラボレーション作品も聴かせてくれる本作は、1991年の（ジャパンの元メンバーのリチャード・バルビエリとスティーヴ・ジャンセンと組んだ）『Rain Tree Crow』、1986年の坂本龍一の『Heartbeat』、1989年の『Secrets Of The Beehive』を含むシルヴィアンの全アルバムから選曲されている。熱烈なファンのツボも見事に押さえていて、ジャパンの『Gentlemen Take Poloraids』に収録予定だった幻の曲「Some Kind Of Fool」の完全バージョンも収められている。シルヴィアンがジャパンで成しとげた成果の多くが巧みな計算に基づいていたことからも、こうして余分な音をそぎおとしたシルヴィアンのサウンドが聴けるのはなんとも新鮮な気分だ。

   エレクトロニカとロックの両方を取り入れたオープニング曲「The Scent of Magnolia」は、その道のプロの多くを恥じいらせるほどの繊細さと知性によって滑らかな演奏を聴かせてくれるし、「Albuquerque」は大胆なコンセプトと魅力的なメロディーが華やかなバランスを保っている。本作はまた、シルヴィアンの変幻自在なスタイルを祝福し、その絶好の見本も紹介している。というのもシルヴィアンは、耳ざわりなバラード（不評だった「Ghosts」）、アヴァンギャルドなジャズ（「God's Monkey」）――バックサウンドの複数の楽器をシンセサイザーに置きかえた2曲――きらびやかな上質のポップスなどさまざまなテーマを常に渡り歩いているからだ。（Maxine Kabuubi, Amazon.co.uk）

Following 1999's Dead Bees On A Cake, Everything and Nothing is a collection of singles, live sessions and oddities from the David Sylvian back catalogue. Since severing connections with cult 1970s/80s band, Japan, Sylvian has continued to probe the underbelly of rock/pop with often arresting results. Many of the songs here have been reworked for this collection but these updated interpretations don't detract from any of the tender, deeply melancholic poetry of the originals. A serial collaborator, Everything and Nothing draws upon material from all his albums, including 1991's Rain Tree Crow (with Japan members Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen), the 1986 Ryuichi Sakamoto album Heartbeat and 1989's Secrets Of The Beehive. In a wonderful coup for cult followers, Everything and Nothing also features the complete version of the lost Japan tune "Some Kind Of Fool", intended for Gentlemen Take Poloraids. However, as so much of what Sylvian achieved with Japan was built on artifice, it is refreshing to hear him in a stripped down arena. The opening "The Scent of Magnolia"--part electronica, part rock--glides with a subtlety and nous that puts many practitioners in both fields to shame, while "Albuquerque" sustains a gorgeous balance between conceptual boldness and engaging melody. Everything and Nothing is a good way to sample and celebrate Sylvian in shape-shifting form. He ducks in and out of focus, between rugged ballads (the infamous "Ghosts"), avant-garde jazz ("God's Monkey") and--on a couple of tracks where the multi-instrumental backing is dropped for synthesisers--a successful glossy pop. --Maxine Kabuubi

作品の商品内容については、他の方が詳しい解説をされているので触れません。

この作品が発売されたのは２０００年。
日本盤は２枚組の通常使用盤でした。
U.K盤のみ、ボーナス・ディスクの付いた３枚組〜特別仕様になっていました。
ファンの方であればご存知だと思いますが、この収録曲がファンにとっては、
喉から手が出る位欲しくなる物・・・

ちなみにボーナス・ディスク収録曲は〜
１．The Scent of Magnolia(Edit Version)
２．Brilliant Trees-Version 2000
３．The Blinding Light of Heaven(Studio Version)
４．The Scent of Magnolia(Portobello Mix)

一昔前位なら、日本盤もボーナス・トラック等も収録、又は同じく限定で発売するくらいのするくらいの対応力、企画力があったはず。
私事ですが、限定盤の存在に気づいた時は、時すでに遅く、泣く泣く海外通販の中古品を高額で買う羽目になってしまいました・・・

近年、CDの販売数低下、特に洋楽作品の落ち込みが著しく目立つのは理解できます。だからこそ、ジャンル、アーティスト等に関わらず、ファンの目線に立った、魅力ある商品企画、販売戦略を立ててほしいものです。

でも、この作品の日本盤も廃盤になるのが早かったですね・・・
（訳詩が読みたい人も居るだろうに・・・）

ジャパン、レイン・トゥリー・クロウ、ロバート・フリップとの競演からの曲も含む
シルヴィアンのキャリアをすべてカバーする内容です。
ただし、「レッド・ギター」や「テイキング・サ・ベイル」等のシングルがないことからわかる通り、
いわゆる代表曲を並べたものではないです。
その辺の選曲の真意がどこにあるのか想像するのも楽しいでしょう。

話題的にはジャパン時代の「ゴウスツ」の再演が大きいと思いますが、
個人的にはミック･カーンのソロ作で唄った「ブイ」（これは絶品！！)、
シングルのみだった坂本龍一との「ハートビート」の収録がうれしい。
そして、未発表曲のすばらしさ！！
彼のアルバムを全て持っていて「ベスト盤はいらない」と考えているかた。
買わないと損しちゃいます。

A Secret of Beehiveが気に入ったのでベストアルバムを探していたらこれに行き当たりました。Ｊａｐａｎ解散後からフォローしていなかったのでほとんどの曲は聴いたことがありませんでしたが、Ｊａｐａｎ解散後坂本龍一とCollaborateした名曲”Forbidden Colours"をはるかにしのぐ出来の曲がめじろ押しです。ビートのきいたポップ色は薄れているのですが、Sylvianのvocalには一層磨きがかかっているし、曲調もさまざまなので聴きあきません。Creditをみると坂本龍一氏がKeyboard, Pianoだけでなく、Percussionほかさまざまな楽器を担当、多くの曲に参加しています。孤独の影に入れる予定だった"Some Kind of Fool"今回書き下ろした"Scent of Magnolia"など未発表曲はまさに絶品。ソロになってからの成長は奇跡的とすらいえると思います。
