   1980年と1985年にリリースされたオリジナル・アルバム2枚を1枚に収めたこのリイシュー盤は、なんとも奇妙な組み合わせだ。『Keepin' The Summer Alive』ではかなりぎくしゃくしながらも、タイトルどおりバンドは多かれ少なかれ協力しあおうと試みている。あの有名なハーモニーはあいかわらず健在で的確だが――もっとも目立っているのは、チャック・ベリーの「School Day」の不釣合いなほど甘いカバー――、救いようもないほどの失敗作もある。

 『The Beach Boys』もまた、タイトルの意図を裏切っている。オリジナルメンバーのデニス・ウィルソンが1983年に亡くなったことに奮起し、かつてブライアン・ウィルソンが率いていた頃のバンドが極めたあの高みに再び登りつめようと試みたのだ。アルバムは部分的には成功しているが、これはブライアンの提供曲によるところが大きい（とは言え、この3曲はブライアンと彼を担当した精神科医の共作だ）。できることなら、あまりに古めかしい1980年代風のキーボードとドラムの音がなければもっと良いアルバムになったかもしれない。その時代遅れ加減は、ジャケット写真でメンバーが着ている袖をまくり上げた上着とまったく同じだ。（Andrew Mueller, Amazon.co.uk）

This pair of albums, originally released in 1980 and 1985, make for peculiar bedfellows. Keepin' The Summer Alive, from the title down, is a perceptibly strained attempt to keep the band more or less together. The famous harmonies are present and correct--most notably on an incongruously sweet cover of Chuck Berry's "School Day"--but they are carrying some hopelessly weak material. The Beach Boys also betrays its intent in the title: galvanised by the 1983 death of original member Dennis Wilson, this was an attempt to recapture the heights once commanded by the Brian Wilson-led version of the band. It's a partial success, thanks mostly to Brian Wilson's input (though three of his tracks were co-written with his psychiatrist) and might have been even better without the horribly dated 1980s keyboards and drum sounds--the musical equivalent of the rolled-up suit jacket sleeves the band sport on the cover. --Andrew Mueller

実はKeepin' The Summer Aliveはビーチボーイズ的には好調時に作ってます！
８０年前後の彼らのライブは本当に好評で名演が多く、このアルバム後にカールらのソロが始まるのも、ビーチボーイズとしてある程度は出し切った感があるからではないでしょうか？

Keepin' The Summer AliveやOh Darlin'、Livin' With A Heartacheはカールの強烈な歌唱力が味わえます。Livin' With A Heartacheはカート・ベッチャーまで加わっています♪メロディもWhen Girls Get Togetherと共に、非常に良いです。
時折、確かに微妙なんですが（笑）、ご愛嬌です。彼らなりの、売れなかった時期の集大成ですんで(;^_^A魅力的な点の方が多いです。

The Beach Boysは、機械音が多く、彼らとしては一種独特のアルバムになってますよね。
ただ、スタッフが優秀だったせいか、どれもメロディは一定ラインを維持していて、これまた実は結構良いんです。←生憎、微妙度もかなりですが（笑）。
リンゴ・スターがドラムを叩いたCalifornia Calling、アルの声を入れたのは流石！Getcha Backも代表曲に入れてあげたいほど秀逸な曲です。Where I Belong、カールの充実した歌いっぷり。終盤のアルの掛け声は本当に見事♪

“いかにも”なマイク・ラブとテリー・メルチャーによる冒頭の、Getcha Backでもう決まりでしょう。これほど爽やかで美しい曲は名曲揃いのビーチ・ボーイズの中でも、Don't Worry Baby くらいしか思い付きません。もちろんブライアン作の曲も含まれ、ブルース・ジョンストンもちょっと異色ながらいいバラードを提供しています。ボーイ・ジョージやスティービー・ワンダーも楽曲を提供しており、スティービーの、I Do Love You ではドラムス、ベース、エレピ、ハーモニカとほとんどの演奏まで提供しています。全体的にこの時代の特徴であるデジタル・シンセ類、FairLight、DX-1、PPG、Kurzwell 250、OB8、などが多用されており、思いっきり８０年代の音に浸れますが、にも関わらず紛れも無いビーチ・ボーイズ・サウンドになっており、６０年代の代表作群を聴くよりも、まずこの作品と言いたくなるほど充実したアルバムです。欲良く見ればタイトルからして自信が伺えますけどね。

~"Summer In Paradice"から聴きだした者としてはその方向性に導いた２作といえると
思ってます。後のKokomoでの復活を演出したマイク・ラブの持つ明るさを象徴する音は
安心感を聴く者に与えてくれます。
ブライアンファンには受けが悪いマイクですが彼がいなかったらビーチボーイズはとても
地味なバンドだったんじゃないでしょうか。
Getcha~~ Backの冒頭の美しいコーラスは日本の車のCMに使われました。~
